Of course we knew the GBA could do transparency effects. We just never looked into HOW they are done. Some games might use some math to do it in software, others might have used funky DMA effects, but the real solution was a special function register of the video hardware.

Oh, I love Advance Wars. I guess I forgot about that. What's GWA1? Edit: Is it just me or is Nell wearing less clothes in the Japanese version than she does in the US version? Did NoA seriously censor her arms and legs? Edit II: Oh, I get it. GWA is Gameboy Wars: Advance. So does that mean your patch gives us Sleeveless Nell? I did have a Project Page (didn't get round to uploading the patch to the this website) but it seems to have been deleted. You can get the current patch here.. It restors 6 of the COs to use the Japanese sprites which go changed in Advance Wars 1: - Nell wears a sleeveless shirt and smaller skirt. - Olaf looks like a blue Santa Claus. XD - Grit looks like a Cowboy. - Kanbei wears a more goofy Samuria suit. - Sonja looks more like a Japanese school girl. - Drake wears sailor cloths.

Couple piccys - Fixed a massive bug in the menu where it only read 6 letters of everyone else. Seems to be working great so far and it knocked out a couple bugs. - Expanded tech menu, etc. Now after doing all of this, so many more bugs came up and it makes me want to shoot myself in a flurry of anger. The gold in the save menu went completely psycho, and I've checked a fresh rom and what not and I haven't quite seen the issue yet. Then, as you can see, the HDMA is still screwy. I can't for the love of god find where the 2nd one is! So lame to have 2 HDMA's just for one menu that are exactly the same X_X Edit: Although, it is kind of nice. Almost everything in all menus is completely labeled. In fact, the entire item menu is completely labeled now, along with the exchange menu, and most of the main menu itself. So customization is really easy to do.

Oh, I thought Killa B meant that he didn't know that the GBA could do transparencies like that period. My bad.

Transparency: pixels with palette index 0 What you guys mean: color addition/subtraction
Take a look at the Genesis; it can do transparencies but not color math.

Ha, now you've got me thinking about the water effect in Sonic.

Ha, now you've got me thinking about the water effect in Sonic. Water like in Sonic 2's Chemical Plant or Aquatic Ruin? I'm not completely certain if that's how it works, but as far as I'm aware, the MD/Genesis starts drawing the screen with the regular level palette, then switches the palette to an underwater one at a specific scanline, and thus draws the rest of the screen below that point with that one... I guess? That's how it looks to me anyway ^^" EDIT: And to actually post something on the topic of screenshots: Not showing anything that wasn't in for multiple versions/revisions already, but, uh, it looks nice? That's still Windows, btw, just using a replacement shell called bbLean. Still no Linux port or anything yet...

It turns out I was thinking of the Sega Master System version of Sonic the Hedgehog. I didn't even know there was more than one version! By the way, xdaniel, if you press Alt+PrintScreen, it'll just copy the current window and you won't have to crop the picture.

I did, the "garbage" on the sides comes from the shell's window border. Windows captures what it thinks is the whole window, taking its own window borders into account, but not bbLean's which are smaller (or something to that effect...).

You knew about the Master System version, yet not the vastly more successful/popular/etc Genesis version?

The title of that last screenshot seems to imply that it's from a game called Echo Night, but I can't find any information at all on the game. Does it have an alternate title I'd be able to look up? It looks totally awesome, and I'm really glad you're translating it into English. Yawn...
Please tell me you aren't up hacking at 3 o'clock. You have to take better care of yourself!
