The leaked version that's been floating around is the state the game was in sometime around early February. Most of the new graphics and new techs shown in the Youtube playthrough of the near complete beta weren't in yet; and it lacked a ton of gameplay balancing, polishing, and bug squashing that the viewer can see in the Month That Could Have Been series.
A common misconception people might have with this leaked version is that, because it's got the new portraits for Crono, Marle, and Lucca, that it's the real 98% version. Those were inserted back in late November or early December 2008. Someone who's played through the leaked version will notice that all the other characters still have their old portraits.

You can tell the difference with the text boxes too. In the leaked version they are completely red but in the final version there's a white outline around them. Also the leaked version's ending sucked so much I thought it was a joke ending punishing me for playing a wrong version of the game or something. The ending on YouTube was better.

Yeah, I wrote that shortly after the "leak". Really, the hack is terrible despite the obvious amount of work put into it. They really needed to learn about game balance in an RPG means that you shouldn't need to grind for a couple of hours just to beat the first boss. Oh well, we will never have to see the final version, and that is probably for the best. Terrible.

badinsults, this is precisely the reason why the leak of the late alpha was an embarrassment to the CE team. The completed game dramatically improved between February and May (I mean, dramatically). The reason is, the work prior to February was all Agent 12 working on the event code to complete the game's basic framework, and the work thereafter was bent completely on polishing, gameplay balance, and final dialogue insertion. Even though the CEMemorial videos were recorded via New Game + to cut down on watch time, the game was definitely fun with the exception of the solo Marle episodes (those would have been fun too with some new techs for Marle, I was remiss on that).
Nevertheless, it's interesting to see just how valued the leaked late alpha is. People are literally going crazy about it and posting Youtube videos when they get their hands on it. It's really a testament to just how worthwhile fan culture has become, and more importantly, a testament to the fierce desire for a Chrono sequel.

The irony being, it's probably more popular as a result of what happened than it ever would've been had it just been released normally. The vast majority of hacks never gain anything resembling a mainstream following, regardless of the amount of work put into them. I can count the number that have on a single hand.

I was under the impression it was because they hadn't balanced anything in the game yet. They said they just coded the events and placed the enemies first, and would have edited the enemies' stats later on in development. If you look at the game's data pretty much every enemy's stats are the same as they were in CT. After all why bother editing the stats in a WIP version that's likely to change anyway? You'd better off doing it last. Anyway I agree with Dragonsbrethren. Many people outside the hacking community don't even know this is a different game than CT: Resurrection (*insert facepalm*).

I personally still think this whole thing was fake, made up only to get them the attention that it has. ~DS

I'm just surprised no one has leaked the final version yet, you can't honestly expect me to believe that it was deleted, so it's out there somewhere, with the beta leaked, does anyone honestly think squeenix would care if the real thing came out?
all SE cared about was the attention, publicity, and fanfare, it made them look bad.

There's plenty of people reworking the alpha into the final version but more handled and possibly better. The ACTUAL final one, I'm sure one of the original creators still have it, but locked away somewhere.

Personally, I didn't see the need for a fan made sequel to Chrono Trigger. Why not make something original that would not have been scrutinized and blocked by Square Enix? Chrono Trigger's game engine is very novel, but I thought the game had a good enough ending that the need for a sequel was unnecessary. Of course, I feel the exact same way about fan made Star Trek shows, even though Paramount turns a blind eye to it. Personally, I doubt that Square Enix would take the time to actually sue people for this hack. I wrote the article to document a happening in the SNES scene that garnered a lot of attention. I think it is a shame that this particular hack got a lot of attention when there are many great Super Mario World hacks and RPG translations out there.

They could easily make the same claim if a game was made using CT's engine. It's still their property. ~DS

logistically you are right it would have been better, but while it didn't need one, there IS gaps in the chrono trigger timeline between CT and CC so a fan made game in between the two isn't such a crazy idea.
