I can understand why you like the font; hell, I even grew up on FFII on the console (FFIV obviously). However, the font does seem a bit archaic, as do the portraits. It is your choice although, do what you wish with your hack.
That's half the point. It's supposed to look that way. However, keep in mind that I'm doing a DS-style hack. So perhaps I'll see about the portraits for that. Put in the GBA ones or something. ~DS

I see you have a project thread that contains all the projects you're working on; however, why don't you make a specific thread for this hack? It seems to be your most prominent piece you're working on, (and no offense) your most interesting. Don't get me wrong, the others seem interesting, especially FFMQ, although you've only really shown screenshots of FFIV. Will you be making any bosses, new spells or any major changes like that? What you've done up to this point is pretty phenomenal.

You find this one archaic, but you wanted to change the nice transparent speech bubbles of Romancing Saga 3 into 8-bit colored NES-style boxes? That logic does not compute.

I like changing something from the default. I see a hackable game and want to change something, it's usually graphical. :s

What you've done up to this point is pretty phenomenal. This is purely a translation hack. I'm only hacking things so that whatever is in the Japanese game can be expressed to the best of my ability in English. All other SNES FFIV translations before this have fallen far from what the SNES is actually capable of. So I'm doing my best to make the game shine. But no, I don't plan on changing anything about the game mechanics. The game mechanics will remain the same. This is all about getting the full text for everything to fit as best as I can; I want to have as little abbreviations or cutoff words as I possibly can. I've shown alot of screenshots for other projects, but they've gotten wiped out in the past by the board pruning. But FFIV is the one project I've done the most work on. I really got into ASM with Demon's Blazon, as it was my first couple of ASM hacks. But FFIV has always been a game I've felt passionate about, so I've put most of my focus on it. I don't have a separate thread for it because it was agreed a while back that if you have more than a few projects, you should just put ALL of your projects in one thread. People like me, Gid, and Pennywise who often work on multiple projects at a time would take up way too much space if we had a thread for each project. ~DS

I'd agree. I also think the font should be left as is, to keep it with what an official translation would've looked like. (I actually prefer that font to the fixed-width variant of GBA font, myself.)

...if it had more accurate translations and the necessary menu expansions/rearrangements and such to accommodate them. I hope I'm not getting myself into double facepalm territory.

This is basically what I'm going for. The FFIV that I wish we would've gotten years ago. In other news, I've messed with the item routine. I now have the ability to have items in the lines where dakuten/handakuten used to be printed. This means I can reduce the item menu to normal size. Won't need it expanded. However, as you can see, I haven't moved the hand sprite yet. I've located the routine to do so, but the left and right item share the same vertical sprite position. So I'm gonna have to write my own routine to write over the part meant for the right item. I've already got an idea of what it is I want to do. I just have class tonight and don't have the time to muck with it. That'll be saved for Wednesday. ~DS

Yup. FFIV is horribly low tech when you take a closer look. There might be tons of CPU cycles able to free up for flashy effects with a bit of optimization, I don't think even DKC3 used an enhancement chip.

Well, there we go. With DaMarsMan's help, I was able to find the last piece of the puzzle. He also taught me some new assembly tricks I never knew about (BEQ +, JMP.l). Now, there's a few interesting things that happen. One I'm not sure if I want to change, and one I know I will likely not change. The first one is that up and down on the d-pad still bring the cursor up and down two lines. Left and right move the cursor one line at a time. I'm not sure if that would be considered an inconvenience or not. Thoughts? The second one is evident in the picture. The trash can is still drawn, by default, on the right. I thought at first that I would want to have it drawn on the left, like everything else, but then it occured to me: it would take up two potential lines for items to be drawn on. I'm not sure I want to change that. As it stands, all one needs to do to use the trash can is move the hand icon to the lowest possible slot, and drop the item in there. You can still move the trashcan around, but I do not recommend it for the above reasons. ~DS

I think you should change the up/down/left-right thing. Naturally, people will want to use up and down. Plus, thought you wanted to make this look like what FFIV should've looked looked like?
By the way, awesome stuff. I don't think many people would have tried rearranging the menu screen like this, so good job.

Second successful DTE. Hopefully this won't need as much menu hacking as Fire Emblem.

Very nice work on this. I was able to get something similar going, but never to this level. I also planned on filling the unused space to the right with a FF3us-style type string, based on the icons, just so that it wasn't so empty. Will you be making these hacks available to anyone who wants them? I'd hate to have to redo all of this myself if I ever get back to my FF4 hack. At the rate I'm going, and considering I don't even care about the menus right now, it's a long ways off before I'll need them. I like the trash can the way it is, but I'm worried that someone might accidentally throw something away unintentionally since it'll look like a blank space on the left... I would really suggest either locking it into the bottom slot (bound to annoy people who move it to the top), or giving it the Trash Can name used in battle in addition to the icon. It's not consistent with the original game, but you don't want to piss people off either, and I'd be very annoyed if I just dropped my 70 Fuma Shurikens in there accidentally. You might even want to put hyphens around the name like they do with -Sort-, to make it stand out even more. Also, I don't like the way the Items window isn't all the way to the left. Unless you plan on unexpanding the border, I'd suggest moving it. Gives you another character for descriptions, too.

It reminds me of FFL3, which had the trash icon to the right of the items list. I don't suppose it'd be possible to hack it so it acts the same way (Up/Down choose item, Left/Right moves the cursor between the list and the trash can).
