I should probably play though the Romancing SaGa series before editing it; however, this is a minor graphical edit I did to the menu:

Anyone have any information on the palettes and graphical locations in the rom for this game?
This is Romancing SaGa 3.

I like the first modification better than the second one.

Someone needs to retranslate that game on the whole. I was talking to D lately, and he said the guy who translated it only knew Chinese. So alot of what he did was guessing, and without GRAMMAR. >_>;

Oh yes. That game could definitely use a redo. I thought about doing it one time, but the more I played, the more I just wasn't that crazy about the game. *shrug*

As for the screenshots. I actually like the original the best. If I had to choose from the modifications, I'd choose the first modified one as it fits better with the original.

I would like the second modification more if the hand were closer the thing it's selecting. I like that the text box is opaque though. My vision isn't all that good lately Tongue RS3 is one of those games I've wanted to play. I think the war mini-game to be interesting, but I haven't played it too much.

Why remove such a nice transparent background? With those bleached out blue/green tones it looks pretty ghetto.

Actually, you're right... The transparent background isn't all that transparent after all. Either way, I liked the opaqueness, not the color. A darker shade would work better.

The border from the original shot really reminded me of a 70's font.

There's "retro", and there's this. I like the solid color idea the best, although I wouldn't mind reverting back to the first modified shot, and possibly changing the colors. If you like the second shot, should I change the blue to another color? I was going for a Final Fantasy NES style theme, seeing as I'm pretty limited to shading. :/

I did a similar theme to my YouTube page:

So, here's a work in progress shot of a massive shop update I'm doing in Final Fantasy:

This layout isn't quite finalized. The shopkeep and players should probably be moved down some. Futhermore, some provisions for longer texts have been made in the layout, but the texts themselves haven't been modified yet. (And some layout changes for longer text haven't been made yet.)

I was wondering about a technical aspect of this modification. I've noticed that the original menus all avoid drawing right next to the edge of the screen. Is this due to a technical limitation, or is it just asthetic? In other words, are part of the edges of my shop menus going to be cut off on a real televsion?

Edit

This layout has issues in that it doesn't take overscan into consideration. As you can see from the second image I posted, which has a green mask over areas that could potentially be off screen. This looks awful and I'm reworking it.

Yes.

Hey, thanks, that article was informative. I also found http://wiki.nesdev.com/w/index.php/Overscan which has NES specific info. I cropped the above shot down to a 90% safe area (252 x 216) and it looks terrible. I thought the emulator's 256 x 224 was enough, but I guess not. I'll rework it and post some new shots.

Edit

In the course of correcting for overscan related issues, I altered the design quite a bit.

I expaned the dialog box to two lines, as the cut down dialog the old version required was icky. I've borrowed some (shop) dialog from the GBA version, as it's nicer (and more gramatical in some cases). The shop title box now has room for longer strings, such as "Black Magic", which have been added. The inventory list has been widened to make room for my planned extension of item names.

All in all, I think it looks pretty good so far. However, it's rather different from the rest of the menu screens, so perhaps I'll have to update them as well.

Thanks. There's still a lot of work to do to finish it. Inns and buying from item, weapon, and armor shops works. Clinics and magic shops have minor (easily fixed) bugs. Selling is totally borked at the moment. (Plus this is all part of something bigger, and that needs a lot of work still.)

Make it so you can buy more than one of any given item at a time (especially in the Item Shop) and I'll be *really* impressed Smiley

I think this layout is even more awesome than the old one.
