Really early Romancing Saga screenshots.

Hmm, I thought this game was being worked on already or done!? I wonder why the
Saga games are taking this much time...

All right, I know this game has an absolutely amazing remake on the PS2 that completely makes this version irrelevant, but I've started playing around with the PS1 Tales of Destiny. No, not a retranslation.

The main idea was to update the localization a bit, improve the menu cosmetics, uncensor some things, and maybe add a few little touches here and there.

A lot of legacy terms in recent US Tales games have begun getting translated much more consistently in recent outings, and many of the ones in this old game differ from those, so I've decided to update them with modern equivalents.

After my extensive work on prettying up the menus in ToP PSX, I was kinda thirsty for more. I mean, I actually get a kick out of playing with cosmetics. I looked back at this game after that and thought "man, they FAILED." Sad I've become more critical of this stuff since doing ToP, I never really noticed how much they sucked the last time I played it.

So, onto the screens, before, and after.

Main Menu:

I replaced the 8x8 VWF with the one I've been using in ToP PSX. Not only do I think it looks better, but it saves a lot of much-needed screen space as well. I retained the original numbers, except that awful football 0.

One of the things that sucked about the original menus was how inconsistent things were. I aligned all the words and numbers and I think the result is much more aesthetically pleasing.

Items Menu:

So much abbreviating. Widened the columns, now the full name of every item can be displayed in the list. Green Crystal Rod is the longest item name. Also centered the menu name.

I know that the apostrophe appears higher than it should. I'm being a bit lazy about adjusting it though.

Equipment Menu:

Font change really saves the day here.  Full item names fit just fine in both columns.

Techs Menu:
http://www.tales-cless.org/images/todpsx/techsold1.png[/img]http://www.tales-cless.org/images/todpsx/stahntechwip3.png[/img]

This menu has had NO cosmetic hacking yet, but man, Stahn's original tech list was incredibly out of date.

I really hope you're planning to release that!!! I would love playing this game a third time Tongue

Nice stuff on ToD, Cless. They certainly needed to do ALOT of work before they released that. Since I don't see a retranslation yet, what you're doing seems to certainly do some justice to the game. Hell, maybe I'll finish playing it when you release that. And I actually would be doing so legally. =D

And Rai, the Romancing SaGa stuff is nice. I think you need to find a better font, though.

Well, honestly, I think a complete retranslation would be a pointless waste of time. I believe the main script was mostly handled pretty decently. At most, the only work I plan to do with the script is fix the password clues for a late-game dungeon, and some other little things, mostly related to changes I've made in the menu.

The password clues for that dungeon are just plain wrong, making it impossible to complete it without outside help or lots of time spent experimenting with combinations. Another thing is the quiz, which has a bunch of questions about ToD and general Namco titles. But in the Japanese version, those general Namco questions were actually about ToP, and I want them changed back.

I can't really blame them for the evolving standard with legacy text. Though I did think some things were translated questionably even back then.

I would like to add the map chats (I'm not sure I'd call them skits in this game, since they're a bit different) back into the game, since they were cut from the US version, and possibly have them subtitled. But that's beyond my current ability.

Random thought: Would it be easier to hack the japanese version, stick in the english text, all of your tweaks and translate the map "chats" than to add in the map "chats" to the US version?

Doubtful. I'd then have to figure out how to get the code tweaks made for the US version inserted, and probably have to go beyond that in order to fit the text (add DTE and crap, which isn't needed for the US version). Not something I want to spend the effort on. I'd rather hack the PS2 remake. Tongue

I LOVE YOU GEMINI! Damn, there are a lot of awesome translations going on right now. But I'm especially excited for Innocent Sin, since Persona 3 just kicked ass.  Cheesy

But I seriously hope that spoiler was a joke. Shouldn't... have... read... it...  :banghead:

I didn't really like what I saw from P3 FES, but Persona 2 is still one of my favorite in the series, so it deserves a translation.

Oh, say hello to this old friend of mine:

It's back, in English this time: it's the anti-idiotic-piracy logo! Sure like hell it's gonna be included in the English version of Gekka's patch.

i, uh, don't think that's actually necessary. it's not like people who sell this stuff on ebay will care about it, and dupes who might buy such a thing off ebay won't see it until they have already paid for it and received the disc. the only really relevant thing is the mention of torrenting prepatched ISOs. but it's not like releasing a translation in the first place is particularly legal; claiming that certain actions are "illegal and will not be tolerated" is a bit silly.

if you want to keep it, i would suggest changing the message to something along the lines of "If you bought this on eBay, you got duped; the translation is available for free online. Also, please don't distribute the patched ISO; only distribute the patch, which should be applied to an ISO of your legal, genuine game disc. Thanks!"

Yeah, I guess that would work better.

That's not true. People who sold many pre-translated illegal copies on ebay didn't with my SOTN (which provided that warning). Most of them write shit like "this is an officially translated version, but needs a modded console", when the Italian logo said it's not official, it's illegal and you can even get arrested for selling such material. Believe me, fear and information are your friends in this kind of stuff. Tongue
