Actually, a quiz isn't that much of a bad idea... If you base the answers on the rules of the board. Not dumb crap like romhacking stuff, since many of our board members aren't even programmers (like me :p). This would force people to READ the rules and make sure they understand how this place works.
But I dunno.

It's elitist... that's it. Sorry, but in everydaylife, people just deal with that kind of stupidity. If somebody here makes a stupid thread, then don't read on after you decided "hey, that's stoopid" and don't answer and that's ok. Seriously... Do people make you take an exam before talking to them? I don't think so...

... But it's OUR RULES. We're not asking them to look up crap nobody but a bunch of fanboys will know on Google, we're asking people to read the rules BEFORE posting here. Why is that elitist?

Is people making uninformed requests even a problem on this board?
Quizzes suck because once one person solves it, they can easily post the answers on the web. (not to mention I hate that kind of elitist crap)

Nobody's answered my question. Why is asking people to READ THE RULES and answer a quiz based on these rules elitist?

It isn't if the rules/questions require common sense.

Personally, I'd make the Getting Started and FAQ blink, then make a nice sticky topic like so: "If you are going to post a 'how do I do that?' or 'is it possible?' thread, read the blinky. Failure to do so will result in an instant ban. You have been warned."

a lot of forums instead of having quizes just have the user cycle through the series of rules and policies before they register or can post.
No matter what you do though you'll never stop the flow of ignorant people, and when I say ignorant, I mean ignorant by choice or laziness, but that's life.

The problem with blinking stuff is that most TV and internet users are able to block it out quite easily.

Enough.. Having a quiz based on the rules themselves isn't a bad idea, but we're not instituting any quiz. I wouldn't bother visiting any board that made me take a quiz regardless of content. I don't want to have to stop coming to my own board. You can continue to discuss it if you really want, but we won't be having any. I hate stupid people as much as everybody else, but it's no reason to compromise this site's integrity or environment.

Most of the pokemon kiddies we get in here about probably the 12 and 13 year olds anyways. Maybe we should have a competency test to sign up for the boards. Like maybe 5 questions and require a ninety percent. Nothing hard by something poki fans could get.
No.Jesus christ, what the fuck were they smoking when they came up with that?! Oh wow. That's beyond retarded...[I took the standard quiz and failed miserably...]

The problem is -- people that don't read the FAQs don't read stickies either. So this wouldn't reduce the number of unwanted threads -- it would just result in a large number of unnecessary bans. When I think about what "these types" of people do, is they see a board about ROM hacking, and say "ooo, I can ask my question here!". So they register when necessary, and immediately head for the New Topic button. Having warnings and minor flashing items on screen up until this point will probably go unnoticed... because as of this point, the person cares about absolutely nothing besides finding a way to post on the board. With that in mind... you might just be able to have a message after the "destination" is reached. Since the person has already jumped through all the hoops to get access to the boards -- by this point they may be more receptive to rules/warnings/whatever. I would think you could detour the person to a "READ THIS BEFORE YOU POST" page after they click on the "new topic" button if their post count is 0. Since it isn't so commonplace and isn't really part of the general routine associated with registering for message boards, it may catch the person offguard and go "woah, what's this?" and have them actually READ it.... as long as you keep it short. Even a medium-large sized paragraph might be too much. If a person hits this page and sees "read this before you post" -- followed by a huge page of rules, they'll just go "yeah whatever" and skip past it. Hell, even I don't bother with large pages of rules. That would probably be how I would approach such a problem -- if I felt it was worth bothering with. But the question we have to ask ourselves is... is this really that bad? I mean we get one thread like this... what... every couple of months? Hardly an epidemic. Honestly -- I don't think we are in need of any such system yet... especially not something as horribly extreme as an entry quiz (I'm really glad Nightcrawler flat out said "no" to that)

Warning, sarcasm detectors are broken. Dispatch repair teams to contain the situation immediately.
I guess I should've put a "this post should not be taken seriously!" disclaimer with my last post. Part of the reason I used a silly  smiley to begin with. Ahhh well.

We have 983 registered members If you only discovered Sonic 2 Beta today and already want to sign up, you will most likely fail the test! So go away! What a turn off!
