I can't find debugging functions in my version, but maybe I just don't know where to look? Do you have to activate them first or something?

I just downloaded the Installer package and it's got a debugger. It's under Debug on toolbar. Now if only I could get the friggin' thing to run my game...

Anything's better than that rip-off SwapMagic stuff, I did everything correctly and it didn't work.

I've been using Swap Magic for the past 2 years since my previously modded PS2 bit the dust. I didn't feel like modding another at the time(surface mount soldering is such a pain), so I figured I'd buy a slim PS2 and try out Swap Magic. I've used it with countless games and never had a problem.

I would hardly call it a rip off.

That was actually what taarna reccomended that I get. Is it really that good? I want something that doesn't involve my taking apart the PS2 itself; I'm good with computers, but consoles are a whole different world.

I run Alpha 3 on PCSX2 yesterday and I was impressed. Dialogues run full speed, battle maps at 30FPS and battle animations at 45-55 FPS, all with full music and sound. While the battle maps are a bit slow it's still very playable and the sound doesn't mess up either. I rather play this on an emulator so I can easily task switch to the gamefaqs translation during playing. If I'd play it on the PS2 I had to run back and forth between PC and TV, or even worse I had to print a few hundred pages of text.

I'm really looking forward to the next version too, they say they'll add native 64 Bit support which would bring another major speed increase. I just hope it will work on XP 32 Bit as I just decided against installing the 64Bit version.
Hmm... how would you go about getting it to run like that in PCSX2? I downloaded the latest copy and when I insert the DVD for SRWAlpha 3, it freezes after the Banpresto logo, probably because of settings.

Getting it to run playable? Try a dual core processor, or at the bare minimum, something with threading. Video card isn't as important, as long as it runs DX9 fully.

For example, on my (arguably weak) rig of a 3.2GHz P4, 6600GT with 1024Mb of RAM, I get about 20 fps through most of SRWA3. Playable, but not really. Jittery, and annoying, mostly.

SRWA2, which is arguably more important to get translated (since it's the next in the series, and all) runs a little better, usually sitting around 30fps. I haven't tried MX, though. That ones easy enough that I can play it legitimately on my PS2. (Yeah, I suck at strategy RPGs, I'm aware.)

Sweet, well if I could get SRWA3 to work decently on PCSX2, I might reconsider taking it up. I might need help hacking it though, since it apparently uses a "BIG" 2 byte Kanji, I might need ASM help. There's A LOT of uncompressed text in there, but I'm not sure what the text is for since I haven't played the game yet. I also  remember finding some uncompressed squad names in there before.

Weak?! Shocked

No wonder I couldn't get it to run. My computer is clinically retarded compared to yours. O_O

Honestly, you're not missing out on much in terms of ps2 emulation. Even the authors say it's usually easier and more satisfactory to play it on the real thing.

It's amazing stuff, and theoretically superb, but the system specs are massive, and won't be dropping much, if at all, in the near future. Lower end systems can get somewhat decent speeds out of the lower end (graphically) games, like the NIS catalogue, though. Disgaea runs full speed, for most people. Even me, from memory.

It is moving towards supporting dual core even more heavily now, though. Which leaves single core processors like mine in the dust. That's okay, though.

At the moment, it's proof of concept. Something to watch, and marvel at, but not actually use.

People have finished games using it, though, so there's obviously a group of people that don't mind a little lag. I personally can't stand it. I can take ugly graphics, whatever, just as long as that frame rate is rock steady. I get headaches when there's intermittent lag.

I dont' know about yours, but my PS2 doesn't have a debugger. Tongue

Sure thing, but I was talking about the physical ability to play it, rather than dissect it. Heh.

I consider what I do with the game a very good actual use. As I said it's much more convenient to play with a translation guide at hand on emulator then it would be if I played on the real PS2. No printing of hundred pages, no running back and forth between PC and PS2 and I don't have a PDA or something similiar I could use as portable text reader.

And the level of emulation they archieved is really amazing. So far every game I tried actually worked, and most of them at playable speed. I have a beast of a PC, but if you have a PC that's good enough it's easily on par with Chankast's emulation for example of the DC.

@Rai: I haven't changed much settings except for enabling all dual core optimizations. Maybe your PC is just below minimum specs? And you should try to make an ISO of the game and run that, much smoother than from physical drive.

It's that good. Obviously it won't be as good as a modchip, or as convenient as the HDLoader, but it's good.

I swear by my swap magic. After upgrading to 3.6 a while back I've had maybe a handful of issues with burns not running, but those were moslty due to screwy dumps. The only legit game I've run into that my Swap magic won't run is Flame of Recca: Final Burning. I had to actually get a japanese PS2 for that one.

Now here's another (albeit offtopic) question:

Is there a PS2 mod that lets you play both PSX and PS2 imports? Or do I have to get one mod for each?
