I see Alpha and Alpha gaiden were released on the PSX and Alpha 3 on the PS2. Where is Alpha 2?

Thanks, those names are confusing >_< I just noticed this Mark Neidengard has made very extensive story guides on the whole Alpha series, fantastic. I think I'll play them in order after all. Or I'll wait for Gid to finish Alpha first

Or I'll wait for Gid to finish Alpha first Extensive isn't even a strong enough word... they are extraordinary. Did you take a moment to read through one at all? He covers most (but not all) branch-points in the story, and even takes the time to translate the little in-jokes, puns, character interaction that might not be obvious... the only time he misses anything is when it's a series that he's not familar with. HDLoader? First time I've ever heard of it, which kinda shocks me, since I thought I'd hear about something like that admist my searching through mod chips and magic swap sites.
If you want to know more, please feel free to send me a PM. It's a great tool for importers, and it's even more powerful if anyone plans on hacking PS2 games.

[/quote] I really want to get something so I can play imported/burned PSX games on my PS2 (large model), any reccomendations? I have the 3 DBZ psx imports sitting around collecting dust, because I don't use my old PSX anymore. Technically, I could use that to play burned games too, using the whole "swap" method. I hated it, though. Used that to beat the three games, and never touched it again. -.- ~DS

It requires a flip-top case mod when used with the PS2, but it's extremely easy to use. It stops the drive spinning before you change the disc, so it has none of the disadvantages of the old swap method. Divineo also still have PS1 modchips available. I gotta warn you though... the DBZ games for PSX aren't exactly what I'd call top quality games. I love DBZ, and I'm a big fan of the games they made for PS2... Final Bout is just horrifyingly slow and stiff, easily the worst of the PS1 titles. The only one I like even a little is Dragon Ball Z: Indainaru Dragon Ball Densetsu.

If you get a PSX to USB adapter (I got mine from Radioshack), it feels pretty much the same as playing it on the real thing.

Personally, I have a DMS4 EZI chip in mine... plays everything via direct boot, aside from the handful of PS1 games that detect modchips (I think). I've read some people had problems with it, but nothing to report here (aside from one or two originals that I had to disable the chip for due to some weird screen flickering it was causing). The no-soldering aspect of it led me to choose it (that's not to say there's no risk in damaging your system installing it though...).

Anything's better than that rip-off SwapMagic stuff, I did everything correctly and it didn't work.

Anything's better than that rip-off SwapMagic stuff, I did everything correctly and it didn't work. I've been using Swap Magic for the past 2 years since my previously modded PS2 bit the dust. I didn't feel like modding another at the time(surface mount soldering is such a pain), so I figured I'd buy a slim PS2 and try out Swap Magic. I've used it with countless games and never had a problem. I would hardly call it a rip off.

Regardless, I know it never worked for me, and I did everythnig right. Basically threw money out the window and my copy of Alpha 3 is useless since I can't play it.

Well, if you have a legit copy of Alpha 3, then that's not the problem. Swap magic plays my Alpha 3 perfectly, so the problem isn't with Swap Magic 3.6.
What version of Swap magic are you using, how are you swapping (fliptop, slide key, etc), and is it really a legit version of Alpha 3?

I run Alpha 3 on PCSX2 yesterday and I was impressed. Dialogues run full speed, battle maps at 30FPS and battle animations at 45-55 FPS, all with full music and sound. While the battle maps are a bit slow it's still very playable and the sound doesn't mess up either. I rather play this on an emulator so I can easily task switch to the gamefaqs translation during playing. If I'd play it on the PS2 I had to run back and forth between PC and TV, or even worse I had to print a few hundred pages of text.
I'm really looking forward to the next version too, they say they'll add native 64 Bit support which would bring another major speed increase. I just hope it will work on XP 32 Bit as I just decided against installing the 64Bit version.

Hmm...does the latest version of PCSX2 (0.9.2 according to their site) still have a debugger? If so, we need to update our copy on the site.
