From http://thewarpzone.classicgaming.gamespy.com/x223.html:

"Super Pitfall II is a carbon copy of the Famicom game Atlantis no Nazo, released by Sunsoft. Hack the title screen and the game easily became Super Pitfall II. It is unknown why this game never hit shelves in America or Europe."

So I believe Super Pitfall (1) was the same in Japan and the US. Then they were about to Super Mario USA-ize Atlantis no Nazo into Super Pitfall 2 for the US, but stopped at the proto for some reason.

I wonder if, like Super Mario USA, the "pitfall" team worked on this other game, as in it might be like a pitfall game, or if it's completely unrelated.

How's this for my updated version? (I only changed the "USA" and removed the "BS". King Mike did the rest.):

I guess this is super nitpicky on my part.  It might look cleaner if you can possibly move "Today's Result" closer to the colon.  It looks a little crammed.  As I said, super nitpicky.  Otherwise, it looks mighty fine.

Well, once again, that was done by KingMike. I don't wanna step on his toes too much. I do agree though, if "Today's Result" was moved over to the left, it would look better.

If I recall "Today's Result" was a seperate graphic than "SELECT: ", and that portion was reused for the results screen (which says "SELECT: Level Select").
I think the original text said something like "SELECT de kyou no seiseki" and "SELECT de KO-SU SEREKUTO".
Also notice the "Today's Result" graphic BARELY fits on the results screen. I guess the option would be to use a thinner font, but then you'd still have something like "SELECT:     Today's Result"

I think it would look better if the shading on the "Bros. 2" matched the "Super Mario" above it. The blue to purple looks a little odd. The shadow on the 2 looks a little mixed up as well(it's on the left side in the top half, and on both sides in the bottom half).

Yesterday, I made several variants of the logo, so if you want me to show you them, ask me!

Yeah sure, let's see them! I actually made the "Bros. 2" using parts of the "Super Mario". The "B" is the top half of the "P" and then flipped and modified into a "B" and the "2" is a backwards "S" modified into a "2". Let me see what you have and I'll mess with it some more.

(The second one is my personal favorite, but the last one makes better use of the tile space)

Yeah those are really good. As far as the BS, I don't think BS would have been in the title of any of the BS games should they have been released in the US. BS Super Mario Bros. 2. "Why would i want to play the game if it's BS?" would be the typical American response. Anyway, what about "Special Super Mario Bros. 2" or "Super Mario Bros. 2 Special" And four each of the separate versions, this is what I have my roms named:

Super Mario Bros. 2 Special: World 1
Super Mario Bros. 2 Special: World 2
Super Mario Bros. 2 Special: World 4
Super Mario Bros. 2 Special: World 5

I don't care what anyone says, to me, SMB2 US IS the official REAL SMB2. The Japanese game in my mind will always be called The Lost Levels.

On that note, I tried to create a new title screen to be used with the .NES format version of the game. I want to have it put on a cartridge with the new title screen.

This is the best I could do, what I created is on the left, the way I want it to look is my mspaint edited version on the right.

What can I do to erase the top half of the blinking number "2" and add a "T" to the "The"?

Any particular reason you want to leave the bottom portion of the "2" intact? Or did you forget to edit that out?

perhaps move everything over a tile or two to make it more centered once the 2 is fully removed?

Well, both. But I thought leaving it there kinda made it look like a dash, as in "Super Mario Bros. 2- The Lost Levels"

No, but look at how because of SMB2/USA, we have Shy Guys and various other lingering elements.
