'faild' in the ending of Mega Man 6 too. I looked at the rom and tried to fix that myself, but didn't work. Luckily they dealt with it for Anniversary Collection.

What about the Phoenix Wright games? I've heard 'The miracle never happen' is quite well known.

My best guess? They were provided a straight (read: Engrish) translation by Capcom Japan and that one line got skipped over.

Yeah, I'm pretty cynical when it comes to translations. Or so I like to think. Don't actually know Japanese.

Unfortunately, it isn't uncommon for things in games to BE vague.  Especially the older ones.

I actually started on Phantasy Star 4 (haven't gotten back to it as I continue to try, with my friend, to finish a script I offered to translate). At least the first part seems accurate. Tongue

The Japanese version of Castlevania 2 has the blatant lies as well. I even found the original Graveyard Duck line.

Speaking of that line, what the hell is a 'graveyard duck'? Is is some antiquated term for a gravedigger or caretaker?

I always interpreted the Graveyard Duck line as 2 clauses, so I always figured Duck as a verb, so I never understood what people were talking about when they brought up the Graveyard Duck catchphrase. 

It's fun to recall a time when VG clues were so obscure the only way to win was to gather hints from classmates by word of mouth or by subscribing to Nintendo Power. 
THAT'S IT!  Nintendo Power cut a deal with developers to botch the dialog and translations so that the only way for players to win was by subscribing to their fine publication, and the developers would get a sliver of the profit.  Magnificent bastards!

Well, certain cheat codes back in the day were very much intended to get players to buy the strategy guides or magazines.

To quote Rex from Toy Story 2: “They make it so you can’t beat the game unless you buy this book! It's extortion, is what it is.”

The original says "the duck at the graveyard"...or possibly "Ahiru at the graveyard". Noun, not verb.

That's kinda what I was getting at. If things are too vague then new players that start the games will just shut it off when they get stuck. I mean heck, I grew up playing the Ninja Gaidens and such but when I pop one in now and it kicks my butt(cheaply) then I just say screw it and play another game(as I'm sure hundreds of others do). Some games need to be tamed down in difficulty, some need better translations, and some just need a simple clue as what to do next.

To Ryusui that's actually pretty funny about C2 being accurately translated. All these years I just assumed that it was bad engrish.

I'll admit that when a game gets too hard, I either find a way to cheat or I just stop playing altogether. By hard, however, I mean "I can't get through this section no matter how well I time whatever needs to be timed" or "I need to level up 10 times in this one area just to beat the boss I can easily get to?!"

I also quit playing Valkyrie Profile when I found out that I had to be parted from my party members... *tears*

I quit playing P2: EP when I found out that they still felt compelled to reference P1's crappy "localization".

Just one more reason to hope P1 for PSP isn't a rumor.

In defense of Simon's Quest, there were valid clues in the game.  If you had Dracula's Eye equipped, you could find them throughout the game:

What'll happen if the P1 for PSP's localization is the same thing? Maybe Atlus feels lazy, y'know?
