Are there any hacks of hacks yet?  It might be funny in a postmodern tongue-in-cheek way to make a "penis hack" of a well acclaimed ROM hack, or for the sake of irony, do an overhaul of an overhaul hack.  I think the-romhacking-scene has developed to the point where it can take the joke.

That's the kind of thing I'd only do out of spite Smiley

It hasn't.

So don't try it unless you want 1990's-like drama to come back. Tongue

That kind of thing sounds childish and is a waste of time. You could be doing more productive things.

I don't see why hacking a hack would be so tabboo or 'childish'.  Nor do I see how it would spark any drama.

I say if you find a hack you'd like to hack... go for it.  I know several hacks of Final Fantasy have used a general improvement hack as a base for their hack... so it's not unheard of.

Well, That super mario land colorized on the database is a hack of a hack. It started out as a level re-arrangement hack by some guy named frank. Then someone came along and changed the graphics and colorized it.

Hacking a hack is fine with mine, though there's no guarantee other authors will be happy about theirs. Undecided\

A random guy finishing another guy's dead translation is technically hacking someone else's hack too :[

I don't have a problem with it, as long as the author gives permission, or the guy doing the new work isn't an ass and claims the work as his.  A good example would be the DahrkDaiz's Red Coin Quest--if someone were to hack that and not even mention who's work it was as a base (despite being rather simple to see), then I'd have a problem, personally.  Same for something even as small as the animated tile/water hack for Final Fantasy I.

There have been at least a couple because I remember a staff discussion on whether such a hack was appropriate to add to the database. Then someone pointed to an example of a patch already hosted which was such a hack. Then we realized that the hack that had been hacked contained language in the documentation that encouraged such hacking, anyway. (I don't remember if these were translation hacks or not, I want to see either it wasn't, or the second hack added non-translation related modifications to someone else's translation hack.)

There are also a few addendum hacks around, such as hap's addendum to my Tabo's Tactics translation which fixes something in the coding (I'm thinking it's not a full mapper hack, just a tiny modification, too lazy to look) that kept the game from running in several emulators. When I finally get around to finishing up a few projects I've been tinkering with, I'll be adding his addendum into the official patch, along with some modifications to said official patch, thus somewhat making it a hack of a hack of a hack.

Well I guess my translation of FF7nes would be a HoaH if FF7nes is an overhaul of FF3j (I'm not sure either way).  SMB2 can be considered an overhaul hack by itself, and there are a few genuinely good SMB2 hacks.  There is even a patch that turns it back into an approximation of DDP.  Some patches are compatible because they mod different areas of memory, so you could superimpose them onto the same ROM.  You can combine a text patch with a graphics patch and a music patch, but it's rare to find a combination that makes sense.

The "penis hack" thing was just an example, by the way (although a "penis hack" *IS* the sincerest form of flattery).  I'm thinking more along the lines of a hack of DXO where Shurek becomes Zebes, the Meta Knight becomes Samus, and the Techno-Goddess becomes Mother Brain.  There wouldn't be a point to this unless it exploits or gives a nod to some of the atmosphere or changes from the original hack.  A simpler example would be Ice Mario, a hack someone made where he replaces your bouncing fireballs with a horizontally gliding ice crystal.  This would be a good starting point for a MegaMan themed hack.  Of course a measure of citation would be included.  We romhackers are very very polite good people.

Mature people with "no-time-to-lose-cause-life-is-short" attitude probably never considered Romhacking as an activity - right now they're impressing the chicks reading fancy poems to them at some beautiful, sunny park.

Lindblum's tought is pertinent and valid. Makes no sense to see a Romhacker being offended because HE was hacked. If there is a kind of people that should know that art and almost everything in the world isn't sacred at all, are the romhackers.

Umm I mean I sincerely plan on hacking your FF7NES translation hack. That game seriously needs a graphic overhaul. So I guess this means you're cool with that haha.

Dr. Mario read my mind.. I will change the GFX of the upcoming FF7 too! No doubt about it!
But I will not ask for permission. I don't have to ask.. The Chinese used Square's work without asking. Lindblum  is using the chinese's work without asking. I will use Lindblum's work without asking... And guess what.. I would be HONORED if someone consider my work good enough to be stolen too!

That happened with my Super Mario MCB hack, back in 1998. I already saw the sprites I created for it on zillions of other Mario hacks around. And it almost sounds like a compliment!

Dr.,
Hey whatever brings attention to my work will be fine by me.  My ego needs stroking.  I hope to release another partial patch this weekend.  Maybe we can instigate an FF7 revival that will compel Square to finally do a solid remake.
There are a lot of things hackers can do to it.  It doesn't have the guy who are sick.  It uses the Aeris date scene; Someone can make a Tifa or Barret date patch.  It doesn't have Yuffie or Vincent.  Someone clever could probably fix that.  At the very least they can be inserted as NPCs, or add an enemy called "Materia Thief" that looks like Yuffie.  Most enemy sprites look FF7 unrelated.  Is it possible to fix it so that it uses normal mappers instead of the esoteric Nanjing 163?

Macbee,
Now I'm curious about SMB MCB and its seminal graphics.  You don't have to ask to use my work, just show my name or something.  It would have to come before your name, and have bigger letters too.

Actually, as long as you stay away from the text graphics you wouldn't even NEED my permission.  Sooo...?  GET TO WORK, PEOPLE!
