Extra Super Mario Bros? I'm watching it. Is it an actual hack, or just a really convincing movie? Cause I'm almost unconvinced anything like that is hackable.

yeah, we all thought so at first, but the force of hacking is with the japanese.

It's always enjoyable to watch a ROM hacker play his own hack. Smiley

I wonder how many other Japanese hacks we don't know about?

I figured somebody else would have submitted it to RHDN by now...

It's actually my fault, I said I was translating the readme and I would upload it. I never finished said translating (damn long readme) but I mean to sometime. Roll Eyes

Dragoon X Omega II by Sliver X

This kind of irks me: It was a joint effort with Thaddeus, but RH.net's database system for the hacks section doesn't allow multiple authors. Thadd did almost all the graphics and level design, so it wasn't exactly a trivial contribution to the project.

You wrote the script didn't you?

I did the script, music, statistical work (Monster/weapon/level/armor/etc stats), quest mechanics, a handful of graphics (Intro, Ending, shopkeeps, Sargon's normal OW sprite, Hoverbike), one dungeon's level design and quite a bit of assembly hacking.

On the topic of extensive hacks, Final Fantasy++ is worth checking out.

I just saw this on Kotaku, and I was pretty impressed.  I don't know if it's the most extensive, but I'm not even a Halo fan and I was quite in awe.

Trying to determine which rom hack is the most comprehensive is always an entertaining discussion.

I haven't played a lot of hacks so it's difficult for me to make a solid judgement on what the most comprehensive hack is. There are some games like the Sonic Megamix and the Brutal Mario demo that seemed to display a lot of flashy gimmicks, and considering the apparent numerous changes of game mechanincs put in these hacks, these ones look hard to be topped.

Other hacks like Extra Mario Bros and Mario Adventure looked like they redefined a lot how the game is actually played, which I think a lot of people find impressive.  They essentially threw out the original games linear gameplay and constructed a new path of their own, on top of implementing dozens of other changes. That can be difficult to pull off, because a lot of the game's elements have to be hacked to meet specific requirements in order for them to be integrated with one another in a different fashion than they originally were.

Super Metroid Redesign and Zelda Parallel Worlds are both very popular hacks, and they look like they might just be the most entertaining examples that are primarily a rehashing of a game.

Not sure how comprehensive Dragoon X Omega II is, especially because I have never played Final Fantasy, but it looks like that it's up there. What I do know is that it is one of the few hacks that contains a complete artistic overhaul of original music and graphics, and it was very well done to say the least. When original stuff is put into a game like that, you know that it had to have required a lot of work.

The only extensive hack I know well is Chorus of Mysteries, and if you don't know why I may have to smack you. Like DXOII, it also contained an impressive overhaul of original music and graphics, although some of it based on other Castlevania games. Some of the games items required some asm, but the majority of changes made to the games actual mechanics was with the enemy AI, and there was plenty of it. Most everything else was done with a ridiculous amount of data manipulation. Though I felt like a lot more could have been done with the game, especially with the level design, I think it stands as a fairly comprehensive hack, but I'm sure that it's been surpassed by some of the other hacks already mentioned.

As for Zelda Outlands, having hacked Zelda and playing through most of the hack, I can easily tell that it is nowhere near the most comprehensive hack of all time, though for its time it might have been.

Wow. I AM a big Halo fan, and I think that's an awesome idea. It's not a romhack, exactly, but it still took alot of work, I'm sure.

I did read the whole thread, and I did see the link to this website:

http://smbarchives.run.buttobi.net/

Perhaps I should be more specific. Where, on that website, can Extra super mario be downloaded? I can't find it.

Silver X brings up Final Fantasy++, and it made me wonder. I started to play Final Fantasy again, got kinda bored and stopped. I was wondering, Epica appears to be a fan-sequel. Has anyone played it and is it worth downloading (on dialup for the next three weeks, got to conserve my downloads.)
