Apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere on this forum (please direct me to the relevant thread if that is the case), but what is the most comprehensive ROM hack of all time?

Well theres a few nes ff1 hacks called dragon xomega or something I hear thats insanely complex.
My vote goes for tweakers Sonic 1 hack that puts shadow, tails, mighty, and a while new set of levels in while keeping the originals.

I was going to say that one too Piotyr, it's

Dragoon X Omega II by Sliver X

to be honest though I haven't played it very much. It's a hack of Final Fantasy, he also made Dragoon X and Dragoon X Omega from Dragon Quest prior to this one.

Super Metroid: Redesign by Drewseph

is also pretty good, it has new level designs, slight coloring changes, and altered physics, but it isn't the complete overhaul of the game, but just completely new levels, it's still pretty intense though.

Also it isn't out yet, but

Final Fantasy VI - Pandora's Box

is looking to be a pretty detailed hacking job. There are about 150 hacks in the database labeled "Complete" you might want to look there for more.

Zelda: Outlands would have to be a contender for the title.

Dragon X Omega is a Dragon Warrior hack. The sequel was a hack of Final Fantasy. Both would likely be favourites as well.

Super Mario Remix is 8 years old, but probably still stands up as on of the most in depth hacks ever created.

I'm sure many people will insist that the award should go to Mario Adventure and they could possibly be right.

But, without a doubt, the most comprehensive hack ever made was WWF: Raw is Tennis (no link available). It may appear to be a simple graphics hack but it actually works on a psychological level.

Dragoon X Omega II by Sliver X

This kind of irks me: It was a joint effort with Thaddeus, but RH.net's database system for the hacks section doesn't allow multiple authors. Thadd did almost all the graphics and level design, so it wasn't exactly a trivial contribution to the project.

Also, if you're going to play the sequel, play Easy Type unless you like old school level grinding to the fullest.

To get back on subject, you may also want to check out Castlevania - Chorus of Mysteries. It's one of the few hacks that can be called a true overhaul in all repects along with the DXO series: There are a lot of thorough hacks in general, but almost all of them keep the same music, theme, levels, graphics, something that leaves a glaring reminder that they're just hacks.

I'd actually vote for Super Metroid Redesign. I loved it. Don't get me wrong, Dragoon was an extremely well made hack. Absolutely profoundly well made hack. But I just couldn't keep myself into it, to be honest.

Theres ultimate mortal kombat trilogy, which they refuse to host here. It adds all the characters from MK2 and 1 to UMK3. Not to mention adding new fatalities to all the characters.

Dr. Mario who worked on this is working on a new castlevania hack as well which looks to be pretty in depth.

yeah, ghettoyouth does good stuff, also

another SMW hack is Mario's Lost World by Icegoom

not as much gameplay alteration but it's full graphics and level overhaul which is an impressive feat.

Extra Super Mario Bros? I'm watching it. Is it an actual hack, or just a really convincing movie? Cause I'm almost unconvinced anything like that is hackable.

Regarding EXTRA MARIO BROS: IPS patch can be found at:

http://smbarchives.run.buttobi.net/

Go to the Lab File section and get file #162

I figured somebody else would have submitted it to RHDN by now...

Everyone else figured you had already done it, so they didn't bother!
