To the two different people that asked if I was serious about the $100,000 for Crystalis: Yes, that was an actual true story. It would have been sometime in early 1998, because I remember that I was working for Zophar's Domain at the time and thought about posting a donation drive on ZD. (This was about the same time that I contacted Galoob and got permission for ZD to host the Game Genie ROM.)
To Kitsune: I'm an American, there are no other countries. Certainly no other countries in which the Rambo movies were given some logical sense of title ordering.
I will be doing a full comparison of the Japanese and American versions of Rambo, Expect an article to be forthcoming. The first major difference that I've noted is that in the Japanese version's dialogue scenes, Rambo has green hair.

If you can, try to get the Ultimate Edition of First Blood on DVD. It's got some really cool interviews regarding the licensing of the movie for foreign markets. :p

$100,000 for Crystalis...somehow, that's not nearly what I would've been guessing. I wonder how much MS/Rare would want for the rights to Conker? Or Toei for the rights to Maple Town?

According to SNK's lawyer, $100,000 was the minimum amount they would accept for any of their properties. I would guess that the rights to Conker would cost somewhere in the range of $100,000,000,000,000.42 because I can't imagine Microsoft giving up the rights to anything without a court order.
Kistune: Are those interviews on the first disk? (I could probably get the movie on NetFlix, if I ever get around to returning Donnie Darko which I've had for over a month now.)

some of Rare's IPs I'm sure they'd be happy to get rid of considering their lack of financial success.
a developer that makes fighting games needs to get their hands on Killer Instinct, or better yet, just rip it off, it's cheaper that way.

I wonder how much it'd cost to get Crystalis *now*? I mean, Nintendo (or some second-party offshoot thereof) owns it, but they haven't done anything with it for ten years or so.

A Crystalis MMORPG would be the greatest thing since whatever was the greatest thing prior to sliced bread, which, coincidentally, was apparently invented about 30 miles from where I live.

Wow i wasn't expecting this thread to explode the way it has, neat. Anyways thanks to the original replyers for clearing up why it was never on the site, and kudos to Nightcrawler for allowing it in the end. Cheers.

Being a community oriented site, executive decisions by one person are fairly rare. It tends to put people into loops since few expect that.

... I have no idea, the version I have is the Ultimate Edition, which is not the newest version. This one has both Full and Widescreen versions on separate disks, and I always see the Widescreen ones, so I guess it's in disk 1. :p

Me too. I've always wished for information to be publically available to: 1.) Find out who exactly even owns the copyright to many of these old games. I don't even know who to contact in many cases. Even if you know the company, you have to get through the front lines. I'm sure a general inquiry at say info@xxxxx.com for purchasing intellectual property would probably be ignored in many cases. 2.) Companies should have some page available on their site where they publicly list their intellectual property, any they are willing to sell, and for what price. Perhaps with those two items in place, we might be able to have many more fully legal fan translations. I suppose a game company could still want $100,000 for 15 or 20 year old property they don't use, but I'd like to speculate, not all would think as such. Lastly, it irritates me that companies would rather sit on this old property they will never do anything with again than sell it to people who would do something with it. That goes for copyrights of any kinds. If you're not going to use your copyright, you shouldn't have it anymore. This is especially true in the US where copyrights last lifetimes and then some. But that's another discussion which I know byuu would love to write several pages on and has before. Bottom line is it's such an uphill struggle to ever do legal fan translations (in most cases anyway, I know there are a few exceptions we've seen) and why should it be? At least game companies cut us some slack by not shutting us all down which they could if they really wanted to with minimal effort. How many of us would still have our pages up after C&D letters from game companies? Likely not many.

Yeah... No one knows who owns the copyright for Zero Wing. Its creator and only known owner shut down quietly over a decade ago.

I hope you fuckers are happy, I've now contacted Sylvester Stallone's publicist to inquire about arranging an interview with Stallone regarding his appearances in video games. If it goes well, I'll see if he'll lend us the money to buy the rights to Crystalis, Mother 3, Zero Wing and Kabuki Quantum Fighter.
