After completing the translation hack for Panel De Pon, I was wondering if there are any SNES games of a similar type which could use a translation. There are so many Japanese games, but I don't know where to look at. One game I just noticed yesterday was another puzzle game called "Kirby no Kirakira Kizzu" sometimes referred to as Kirby's Super Star Stacker. I'm thinking of translating this, but I would like to know if there are any other similar games that are unknown to me which deserve a translation. (actually, is there even a 'wanted' list for these kind of things?)

Also I'm posting this to make sure that nobody else is working on this game, or else it would rather dubious to do so...

I think gid already got the puyo puyo additions and spinoffs IIRC.

the SNES doesn't have a lot left but later systems and handhelds have a TON.

in japan there was even a panel de pon game you could play on your gamecube via the dr. mario and puzzle collection GBA game.

I think that game you're thinking of is Kirby's Avalanche which is an american version of Puyo Puyo. Jigsaw Party is a pretty nice jigsaw puzzle game.

There were a few Sailor Moon puzzle games that kinda reminded me of those types of games. No one's translated them yet.

I had looked at them in the past, by request, and I'm pretty sure the font was compressed on one of them. But if you can get around that, it wouldn't be a bad project.

Jigsaw Party was localized in the US as "Pieces".

Maybe Tetris Battle Gaiden.
The Kirby game's cart MIGHT have one of those extra chips.

Did you get Guest's starter pack for Kirby's Star Stacker?

Panel De Pon had all of its graphics compressed using a custom compression algorithm. So, I think I can work around any problems that might occur. Of course, I have to remain humble, because I've only done one game so far.

Panzer88- Yes, I know about Nintendo Puzzle Collection. That looks interesting too, but hacking a Gamecube game is a bit out of my liege. But if I could do it, I would sure translate that game.  Grin
Also, I do think there are many unknown Japanese SNES games which are pretty cool. There's just so many (sometimes quite obscure too..).

Pennywise- What is Guest's starter pack if I may ask? I'm not too familiar with the game so far.

  • Kirby no Kirakira Kizzu, looks like a fine game to me. Found some translated dialog
  • Jigsaw party was already done according to KingMike.  So we can scratch that.
  • Tetris Battle Gaiden... Never heard of it. Might be worth a peek.
  • SD Gundam Power Formation Puzzle (id. previous item)

Go to Misc->Abandoned Projects here and you'll find a starter pack for a game that Guest calls Kirby's Star Stacker. My guess is that it's the same game you're interested in. Basically the starter pack is a script dumper and inserter plus a tile map dumper and inserter. He might've done more, but you have to check out his work.

Sailor Moon - Fuwa Fuwa Panic 1 and 2. Not so sure if they're Tetris-like, though...

Those would be the ones I was talking about. I tried looking at the first one, and I gave up once I realized the font was compressed. I still don't know how to de/recompress a font.

Super Puyo Puyo 2 on SNES is translated. But not the newer Super Puyo Puyo 2 Remix, which has some features like a mode where you fight over two dozen computer opponents on quite high difficulty.

Kirby no KiraKira Kizzu would be great. It's fun! Smiley Although, I've heard it's heavily compressed and would take a lot of work to edit.

There's also Mario's Super Picross and the similar NP volumes.

Incidentally, if you're in contact with Guest, if you have him register an account on the new Pantheon with a fake or nonexistent email address, I can activate it for him.

It's becoming a nice list so far:
  • Kirby no Kirakira Kizzu. Found translated dialog and decompression code.
  • Jigsaw party
  • Tetris Battle Gaiden
  • SD Gundam Power Formation Puzzle
  • Sailor Moon - Fuwa Fuwa Panic 1 and 2
  • Super Puyo Puyo 2 Remix

Pennywise, you're right! I first thought it was for the GB version (which only came out in the US), but this guy did all the stuff regarding decompression and such. Now I just need to go through the assembler code pieces to understand how it works. Also I noticed in his description that KKK uses almost exactly the same compression scheme as PDP did. That should make life much easier for me. Now I have very little reason not to do this translation hack.

DarknessSaviour, What you could try with respect to the decompression stuff is:
  • Dump an image of the RAM (using Geiger's snes9x debug) then find the offsets of any decompressed font and set a break point when that particular address is written.
  • If you hit the breakpoint you should be inside the routine for the decompression algorithm.
  • From there you need to discover how it works, by jumping out of the routine back in the original program. Then let the tool disassemble several bytes before the current address and you should be able to find the call to the subroutine (JSR or JSL instruction).
  • Now that you have the function call, the tedious part starts where you need to find all the instructions used for this routine from the beginning. Dump them after disassembling them and make an ordinary C/Java/(any language) program for it. Using that you should be able to decompress any images.
  • Note: there might be better ways, but this worked for me...

No, that GB version of Kirby's Star Stacker did come out in Japan.

The first Magical Drop on SNES has a patch here, so that's done. Don't see one for it's sequel.
Also a Ranma 1/2 puzzle game which I don't think is being worked on yet either.

I'm a bit frustrated about Nintendo Puzzle Collection. They announce it, go through the effort of drawing an English logo (was in one of their holiday shopping guides), then silently cancel. Not even a generic notice on their website saying so.
