Author Topic: Adding Features to a Translation  (Read 2745 times)

I'm not talking about adding anything that causes major gameplay difference, but something like an original sprite or a special code (if the game has a Password system). Leaving your mark on the game in a subtle way. I'm curious what other people think.

Personally, as long as it's done tastefully, I've got no problems with it. Sort of like how some games have special areas of the game where you can meet the developers, but it really doesn't affect anything. Gameplay changes like ramping up the difficulty (Streets of Rage 3 anyone?) is going too far, though, imo.

I'm pretty much in agreement with Red Comet on this one. Adding an extra area, or an extra hidden boss, or something minor like that is fine. Dinking with actual gameplay (adding extra items, changing formulas/difficulty, remapping areas, etc) is going way overboard.

I'd say fixing bugs, or other visual cleanup is great, but try not to change the game from what it was originally to what you want it to, but this is already the code of a responsible translator.

Most of the time, yes, but there are some games I wouldn't have mind rebalancings on. Grandia 3 and Valkyrie Profile 2 come to mind.

And I wouldn't complain if any Fire Emblem hackers made a way to turn off permanant death.

For what it's worth, I added a special code to Esper Dream 2. Starts you on EXP level 5 with $50,000, names the character "Gid" Wink It's for a rare exception to the routine handling name entry, and while it's perfectly possible to replicate it with 100% accuracy, it'll almost never happen by accident unless the player knows what they're doing.

I wouldn't mind seeing a hack for Tales of Destiny that lets you get Leon and Lilith on your party without cheating. Also I've been meaning to ask you RC if you would hack Bare Knuckle 3 to match the harder difficulty of Streets of Rage 3? As I believe you mentioned the american version is harder than the jap version.

I've considered it (basically make an SoR3 patch that changes the difficulty, names, and title screen to match the domestic release), but right now I'm more concerned with getting the translated script in. Everything else is an after thought at this point. The two games, BK3 and SoR3, are a lot different than you'd think. The data isn't stored in exactly the same place in both of the games. The script, for instance, while in the same area, isn't in the exact same place (yay for removing parts of the game). I'll keep your request in mind, though. Smiley

Yes, within reason.  If you go too far, you're moving into the category of a "hack" instead of a "translation".

If there were other changes that were desired aside from the translation, there's always the option of creating a hack to patch on top of the translation, thus adding the extra content for those who wanted to check it out.

I'd say things like adding yourself as a cameo, a secret code that displays a message, and that kind of thing are about as far as I would think reasonable. Changing gameplay would be bad, but if you added a secret item that you could only get by a really complicated method that might be cool.

I think translations should just be translations, the only changes made to the game should be related to getting the text to fit. If the creator does anything else (Changing gameplay, graphics/palettes, etc.) it falls into the improvement hack category to me. That's not to say an improvement hack is a bad thing, not at all, but you should probably offer the game as it originally was for those who want it.

I think I'm in general agreement with the majority here. Adding some easter eggs is OK. I've done so. Technical bonus are OK. Bug fixing OK. A code or two is probably OK by me as well.

I think when you hit game play, you have to draw the line. Now your changing the game. That's beyond the scope of a translation in my opinion. I agree with MegaManJuno that you can just make a separate improvement hack patch if you're going to do that.

If I download a translation, I want to be able to play the original game. I don't mind some bonuses and secrets, but I expect the original game and game play to still be present.

With that said, one potentially questionable idea I've had for Emerald Dragon is to improve the palette. If you've seen the SNES port and other ports, you'll notice the color seems washed out as opposed to the other ports and original game. While I highly doubt anyone will object to me improving the palette, is that part of the translation, or does enter the realm of improvement?

I wouldn't change the colors... there's emulator and monitor controls for that.
