Yeah, the extra areas that were added were rather small and pointless, in my opinion.  Maria does play a bit differently than Alucard or Richter though, so it does provide some additional replayability in that sense.  Plus being able to play any of the 3 characters from the start (on the PS1 version, I seem to recall having to complete a portion of the game as Alucard before you could play as Richter), is a nice addition if you've already played through the game as Alucard before (for instance, on the PS1 version) and just want to play one of the other 2 people.

I liked Alucard's third "item" hand more than anything, I never used items in the original because you had to take one of your weapons/shield off to use them. The "Boots of Godspeed" were also a  nice addition, makes the reverse castle a little better. Maria... meh, pointless, just like Richter's game.

Maria's and Richter's games may be ultimately pointless, but they do offer different challenges for the game.

The Saturn's added remixes of the old songs are pretty good. And I love what they did with the Librarian's theme.

as a general rule unless it is a bad port, sprite based two dimentional games usually run better on Saturn do to it's technical architecture, whereas Playstation, is GENERALLY worse with that sort of thing. Saturn was originally going to be a 2D only system, it also runs on 3 cores. Don't take my word for it, I'm just a Saturn fanatic, look it up on Wikipedia.

If SoTN had been ported by a team more experienced with the Saturn, there is no doubt that it would have been a better game. As it stands, there is additional slowdown. Play both, and find out, if you wish. Smiley

 Please don't use that site as a reference. Many of the system specs are (inexcusably) off or just incorrect speculation.

my bad guys, I did do some follow up research so to confirm things and found a lot of inconsistancies. I'll try to be more thorough next time before posting, I've pulled out both versions and you are right, bad port. Anyways, thanks for being gracious about the bad source.

When I first got the Saturn version I had real difficulties trying to return to the PSX version. You eventually learn to live with the Saturn faults. I learned to live without the map, luckily I played the PSX version alot so I didn't need it so much, mostly needed it only for map filling. I think where the slowdown was worst was in the outerwall. If there was rain or fog effects there was slowdown through most of the level.

The saturn version almost didn't come out. It was delayed for a long time and that was near the end of Saturns life. I remember EGM speculating about that, they also complained about the game having it's faults even tho it was delayed so long.`

Generally, the expectation of a game that's been delayed for a hell of a long time is higher simply because of the delay. They've been fuckign waiting 4 someodd years(Random number), they're going to be a bit pissy.

Necroposting for the win!

Er, back on topic... There were a number of gameplay improvements in the Saturn version, actually. The dive kick is better in that it's less likely to get you hurt out of your dive. Also the run relic is quite nice. And yes, there's the 3rd hand. So while the lack of some effects (easily replicable on the Saturn with some programming know-how) and slowdown (only slightly more than on the PSX, shouldn't be there at all) are annoying, having the extra areas and content combined with the gameplay tweaks, I find I have a more enjoyable play experience with the Saturn version of the game. I play both from time to time, but I really have spent the most time with my Saturn copy. Just a smoother play experience all around. Heck, even the better Saturn controller makes playing easier.

And even MORE back on topic, a re-translation of the JPN version or Saturn version, including all the missing content, would be quite nice. Also nice would be some actual game mods (and not the emu-only memhack someone is doing, though it does look cool.)

Personally, I'd like to see the script (and maybe voices, too?) from the PSP version inserted, seeing as it's a bit better in some aspects. I haven't played the original game, though, so I might be wrong about that.

Well, the new translation is a little better, but it's still a terrible translation.

Are you kidding? The old voice acting may have been hammy as hell, but at least it was delivered with some conviction. All the writing needed was better casting and direction to go with it. The new script just plain sucks. And I mean that sincerely. Dracula's the only VA who is undeniably an improvement ("Behold my true form...and DESPAIR!"), but the lines he's been fed lack the soul of the original.

It's like I've said time and time again: a literal translation is not necessarily a good one. Some of the writing is, yes, a bit corny, but it needed to be refined and revised, like Woolsey's script for FFVI, not thrown out altogether. I was looking forward to hearing the classic lines featured at the end of Rondo of Blood (they're not actually there in the original PC-Engine version; as it turns out, the conversation is part of the ending!).
