I was wondering if there is any translation of the JAP SOTN game? i have the original japanese import and  HATE the english voice acting in the US version, has there been any project that translates the text of the Jap version?

I've not seen any patch of this kind. You're right that it would be very cool to have, and since the translation work has already been done, it might not even take so long. It's not the kind of thing that I could do, though.

What are the ethics of taking a translation from an official English release and inserting it into the Japanese version?

I think it's fine, but you should make sure that you mention in the readme.txt somewhere that your patch is not a true (re)translation, it's just a transplant of the official English script.

As far as i know, the English localization was pretty good, so just moving it over would be sufficient, no need to retranslate.

If it did exist it probably would of been for the Saturn version. But it don't.

I'd be quite interested in doing this myself... if I had any clue where to find the text. I've had a little look around, but I didn't find anything obvious. If anyone could give me any suggestions, I'd like to try doing this.

I was actually looking for the English text in the American version, in the hopes that it would help me to find the Japanese text in the original version in a similar place. I read a little Japanese, so I'd be able to recognise what I found. Not any kind of fluent level of reading, just enough to recognise a few words.

I love the voices in the Japanese version of the game, so if anyone can offer me a bit of guidance on how to get started, I'd like to at least attempt this.

Sadly, the things I've learned by trying to play around with cartridge roms don't seem to apply to PSX ISO images.

Saturn version? You're talking about Castlevania: Symphony of the Night starring Alucard, right? O.o Saturn Version...?

Yes, there's a Saturn version and, yes, it only came out in Japan.

Maybe that's why I never knew about it... I only "exteriorly" know about Castlevania. Not into it as much Final Fantasy and DragonQuest.

The PSX version is superior. While the Saturn version had extra content, such as new areas and such, it also had slowdown. Not good.

The slowdown in the Saturn version actually isn't nearly as bad or as prevalent as people want to make it out to be. Yes, it's there, but it is in no way game-breaking. You really only see it when your dashing and kill a big enemy that dies in a somewhat shiny way. And even then it either has to be a BIG enemy, or there has to be a lot of stuff going on on-screen. If you look at when the slowdown actually occurs you'll find that it doesn't actually have that big of an impact on gameplay at all. My only real gripe about the Saturn version is that there is no map button, so I have to go into the menu every time I want to check the map.

Then there's the fact that Saturns in good condition are a lot harder to find than they used to be, while you can play the PS1 version on a PS2 which is still (just about) on the market. You can even emulate SoTN to a reasonable degree of accuracy. I just don't see any good reason to play the Saturn version.

Because I have it? Because I like the extra content? Because I like the Saturn in general? There are several good reasons someone might want to play the Saturn version instead of the PSX version.

Because you have it is a good reason, I suppose. Since you can get the Japanese PSX version for next to nothing, it's not a compelling reason though. Liking the Saturn is an odd reason. Personally, I like games, not consoles. As for the extra content, I really didn't think it added to the overall experience, but if you enjoy it, that's good for you.

I'm certainly not trying to flame you for your choice to play the Saturn version, but I found it to be appaling, and not in any possible sense a comparable experience. When I said there was no reason to play the Saturn version, I meant for me.  There's no way I could be convinced otherwise. If that was the only version, I wouldn't play the game.
