Also just an idea of how to go about it: Do it sort of like an open source project, make a change, document what your change was. Everyone keeps changing stuff and eventually it's a whole new game.
That's the plan. If we do go forward with this, I hope nightcrawler will let us set up a board specifically for it. a thread for mapping out kanji in the table file, a thread for mapping out the text banks and pointers, etc etc etc. So we've got this one thread where people can say what they're doing, people can ask questions, and everyone learns and what not. Ideally. So... we've got two yeses and a bunch of maybes?

I think there's enough interest to go ahead and figure out what the project would be. I suspect that a whole bunch of the maybes will jump over into the YES category once we figure out what it's going to be. I'm tossing a vote for a Saturn project. I can get on board with that. Plus, something like this is probably the only way that system will start getting hacked. I know there's a ton of official documentation available because it's linked from here. I also know that there is pretty much NOTHING for available tools, which is what makes something like this the best way to tackle it. And there are so many good games just begging to be translated Will it be a pain in the ass at times? Sure. But think of what we'll have accomplished, what we'll have learned, and what we'll have given to the community if we pull it off.

So we should probably start posting what games we would like to see done, because people have said they would be interested if it was one of those games.
Well, there's always plenty of game suggestions in this thread to choose from...

Yeah put who wants to look through 14 pages? Besides, if we're going to delve into the Saturn system I doubt there are any games listed there. Since Suzaku seems fairly knowledgeable about the Saturn I nominate him to list some game ideas.

I suggest Policenauts, one of the Langrissers or Sakura wars.. I'm kidding, of course. Would it be easier for you guys if a translation faq is already available? Of course a translator would still be needed, but I guess it would speed things a little up even if it's not entirely correct or takes a different approach at some things? I say this because my Saturn most wanted translation right now would probably be Princess Crown, and there's something like that available for it. I've played the game up to the half of it or so. There's some other very interesting 2D stuff, e.g. the Madou Monogatari game and Enix's Nanatsu Kaze.

A really quick Saturn (if we even go with a game from that system) list off the top of my head:
Langrisser I-V (I & II are together in the Dramatic Edition, the other three are individual games) Super Robot Wars F & F Final Devil Summoner (the first one) Dragon Force II Slayers Royal I & II
I'd also like to see the whole Shining Force III series in English, but there's already a translation project in the works for it. I'd also kind of prefer the Dreamcast incarnations of the Sakura Wars series instead of their Saturn counterparts--mostly because those are the ones I own. I may be able throw something more together after work. We'll see.

I will set up a board if you guys can actually agree on what game to do, an outline of how you think it should be, and are ready to start getting it off the ground. If you can get that far, I'll do it.

I'll suggest an international project, so translators that are non-native speaker of English can join in. A multilingual project would became very interesting.

Are you thinking of working towards one multilingual patch, or are you talking about each language getting its own patch? If there's enough space for multiple scripts (so probably a CD-based system) the former could be really interesting.

If the Saturn is going to recieve the attention of this, I would second Dragon Force 2 as an excellent game that deserves an excellent translation.
Great idea Neil, this would be a wonderful resource for people like me that will actually get to go through a step by step translation in the making and learn and understand romhacking and translation much better. If this takes off then good luck guys, i'll keep my eye out.

A Sega Saturn game I would suggest is the remake of Castlevania SOTN.

I think this idea sounds interesting. I can help in only minor roles, as I'm quite busy, but I think I still might be useful.

Castlevania: SOTN could be interesting. The game itself is a bit different, but I don't actually remember how different the script is. I seem to recall that most of the extra content didn't involve text. I wouldn't mind seeing it translated at some point, but I don't know about giving it priority.

Castlevania is the only series I've played out of those listed so I would probably go for that. Not that it really matters what I think, I probably won't be doing much of the translation (unless it's a rough draft or something) and I'll agree to do pretty much any game out there. One question: Is there a good Saturn emulator with a debugger? Or will we have to make one.
