BUSTA WORF!

*ahem*

But is that standard ASCII or Japanese two-byte, full-width letters?

It seems 2-byte to me.

To be real technical about it, this two-byte/full-width thing only came about due to personal computing systems using it willy-nilly, not because of any standard. You think I did the research on this because it was fun? well it was.

Ahh, I'm so excited at the prospect this game might potentially get translated! Even if the chance is slim, it's the first time I ever heard anyone so much as mention their interest in this game on a ROM hacking site.

It seems like it desperately needs a vwf to me.

This game might be more simple than what you expect. This is what I got in a few minutes:

All I did was use the Shift-JIS Table to edit the file SLPS_014.18. It looks like this single file might have all the text for items, dialogue, etc.

Nice!
I'll try it out. If nothing else, maybe I can better start translating some stuff here and there. Thanks!

A “proportional” font, or “VWF” (variable-width font) as the ROM-hacking lingo goes, has different widths to letters. The letter “l” is skinny, the letter “m” is fat, and all is well.

As it stands, the letters currently in the game only let you do this dealy, apparently.

Oh I see. I guess that would give a space problem...

From that pic, I'm not sure about the font size either. Those are some big letters. Shocked

I'm sure you could do it justice, Gemini. You were offering to help, weren't you?

Seriously though... don't mind me, I'm just hoping to see this game get translated.

Hmm things aren't looking too good so far. Someone else has tried experimenting on the game for me like MZ did, without finding out how to fix the text space problem... Also seems like a lot of the text is compressed.

I had hoped it wouldn't be such a problematic game <_<"";;

Good news! Someone began looking into hacking the game at another forum, and has done some nice progress so far. Almost the entire script has been dumped for me, and he's now working on fixing size problems and other things. If you're interested in giving a hand or seeing how it goes, you can go here:
http://artonelico.isisview.org/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1145

So I've begun translating. Here's to hoping things will continue to go well.

I don't know, should I make this a "Personal Projects" now to keep it appropriate?

I suppose, as the person doing the hacking, I should speak up...

So far, it's going pretty good. Turns out the text I was thinking was compressed actually wasn't, I was just doing my search wrong. It's possible there's things I haven't found yet, but there's enough to do with what's out in the open that I'm not going to worry about it for now.

My current project is modifying the code to use single-byte encoding, which will solve... a lot of problems. I think I've got most of that nailed down now, just looking for the part where it decides when to wrap the lines.
