Topic: Atelier Marie Plus PSX translation (Read 2 times)

Hi all! Hope I'm posting this in the right place.
I have been lurking for a while and reading through some of the material on this site, but haven't found anyone working on Atelier Marie.
Now, I am willing to be a translator for this game. I also submitted an ad in the "help wanted" area, but while waiting for that to be approved, I wanted to try and see how much interest there would be in such a project in the first place.
The game I am thinking of translating is either the PSX "Atelier Marie Plus" version or the PS2 "Atelier Marie + Elie" version. But since I can't hack to save my life, I hope to find someone who can possibly help me with dumping the scripts and putting them back in again... I hope that's possible for that game? I was looking in the utilities section but didn't find much for script extraction for PS2 games.

You don't need a PS2-specific tool to dump scripts. You could use existing tools to do so.
However, not many people are versed-enough in PS2 ASM to do any major hacking. If the game has a compressed font or compressed graphics/text, knowing how to program in MIPS (or whatever the processor is) would help.
But the basics are practically still the same.

I see. I'll try out some different tools to see if I can manage to dump the script myself then. So depending on how the game is compressed, it may not be possible to make a patch at all for ps2 games? Hmm that's too bad. I hope this game proves hack-able (or whatever to call it ).

I wanted to try and see how much interest there would be in such a project in the first place.

Well that's good to hear I definitely don't plan on leaving it like this if I can help it. Have been looking a bit at extracting scripts and trying some tools, but not really getting any of it so far... so I'm still hoping someone out there will magically know what to do and come by to help out.

It's good to see that you're putting forth effort on it. Have you tried searching in the files for any English words that you recognize? Or searching for japanese text in SJIS? Once you identify exactly what format the script is in, it'll be a lot easier.

Have you considered working on the PS1 version of Atelier Marie? There are actually hackers who work on the PS1, so it might be easier to find someone to help you. There are no shortage of versions of Atelier Marie, and I do wish your project the best of luck. Playing through the games with my minimal knowledge of Japanese is fun, but not nearly as much fun as it could be.

There are hackers that work on the PS2 too. ...Just not that many. Ningyo, for starters, I'd recommend reading my Miniguide on VFS in the document section if you're unfamiliar with Virtual File Systems. It's rather informal, but informational. As far as script extraction goes...surely you can dump scripts using tools from the utilities section...but honestly, most script tools (including Atlas) don't scale well to CD platforms, even if they are uncompressed. Normal dumpers and Atlas for reinsertion are still a good solution for menu, item/equipment lists, and PS-EXE text though. Unfortunately, dialogue tends to be very scattered and difficult to keep track of due to layers of redirection.

Wasn't there a DS remake or something that was announced for a licensed localization (unless I'm confusing it with Atellier Annie)?

So far as I know there are two Atelier games on the DS, and one is Atelier Annie which is announced for localisation by NIS America. The other is Atelier Lise. I know nothing about a remake of Marie or Marie + Elie for DS, but hey... it could happen, it's been ported enough times already.

Hmm I don't think there is much of a difference between the psx and ps2 versions, so maybe I really should choose that version instead if I can find help there more easily than on ps2.

You do. First of all, because it's original and secondly - there's a well working debugger for PSX, as the least.

I've been trying to read some more documents and such, but I'm afraid it's all still beyond me ^^;
I guess I just have to be patient and hope that someone interested in the project will show up and help me hack the game. I'll also try and ask around in other places.

This game might be more simple than what you expect. This is what I got in a few minutes: All I did was use the Shift-JIS Table to edit the file SLPS_014.18. It looks like this single file might have all the text for items, dialogue, etc. I know this isn't of much help, but at least it is a start. Once you figure out the real table, you can dump the script and then start translating some stuff; at least until you can find a person willing to do the hacking, I guess. I also did a quick search to see if I could find the full table in places where I was able to find it in other games (TIM files or VRAM), but couldn't find anything. (I'm currently working on Choro Q3 for the PS, which is my first translation too, by the way. )
