If this is your first romhack, I suggest you find another project. You're trying to kill the Chaos Emperor Dragon as a Level 1 Trainee Rogue armed with a butterknife.

,
You simply need patience why don't you start trying things yourself.
and there's no way to learn everything from your first translation get over with it.
Maybe try another game and come back later.

There are some things you don't so much learn in romhacking as develop an ability to intuit. You can't simply plop a stack of manuals in front of a fresh newbie and expect them to translate Super Robot Wars Alpha 3. It's better to start small, with minor graphics and text hacks.

Have you ever played Final Fantasy Tactics? If so, you know that new classes are obtained by acquiring a certain proficiency in more basic classes, and that the best classes are obtained through gaining skill in multiple. The same thing applies to romhacking. You start out with minor graphics hacks, move up to modifying sprites and tilemaps, then hacking palettes, and with some ASM proficiency thrown in for good measure you'll be implementing proportional fonts (or VWF as we call them). It's not something you can master in one sitting; it takes time and practice.

You should probably go to GBAtemp.net they've got more DS hackers there

Ah so he is. I've also just re-read this and it's a menu translation he wants to do and not a full game translation (that's what the other guys think)

Quantity alone isn't worth too much.
Anyway, in addition to the basic tutorials on this site, this thread should help with pointers: http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php/topic,6764.0.html

If this is your first romhack, I suggest you find another project. You're trying to kill the Chaos Emperor Dragon as a Level 1 Trainee Rogue armed with a butterknife.

If every aspiring ROM hacker who attempts to work on a DS title were to find a new project, as they are told every single time someone posts such a topic, we'd be out of GB/C/A games by now. I don't see how a menu translation is "the Chaos Emperor Dragon" even if it's for a vastly undocumented system. The fact that this guy is aware that he needs to edit the pointers, even if he's not sure how to go about doing so, indicates that he's put some basic studying into the subject. The fact that he's asking specific questions (with proper terminology) that make sense also lends credence to this assumption.

That being said... valyr, have you tried locating the pointers in another game, just to see if you're doing it right? That would give you some indication as to whether the problem is with your understanding of pointers or if there's something odd about your particular project choice that makes them difficult to locate. You should be able to grab an English released NES or GB ROM and try out the pointer techniques from the documents and see if you can move things around properly. If so, then there's probably something odd about the project, if not then you may be misunderstanding something about pointers in general. (Unfortunately, I've never even extracted the files from a DS ROM, let alone attempted to hack them, so I can't offer much specific advice on the subject.)

I'd also like to add that the DS is very well documented apart from the WiFi protocol and some advanced 3D details. For a romhacker's intents and purposes it's perfectly documented.

Where would one find these documents? (I just checked RHDN and came up with 0 hits for DS-specific documents.)
