Well I thought I had the asm hack for reducing bytes almost done, but after further testing it really messed some stuff up. Gonna be a little longer on the first release than I thought.

Well, admittedly for anyone that cares I took about a month off to clear my head. Gonna get back to working on this project soon.
Currently I have the byte reduction working for some parts but it doesn't always work so I'm looking into that problem (apparently during speech the output is only every other character, but in menus and things like name entry it works). Once I have that worked out, I should be able to release a first version mod to the menus (including things such as spell/ability names and weapon/armor names)

That includes me! I have considered playing this game using the translation found on GameFAQs, but it seems to have been abandoned part way through. I might be able to follow the dialogue anyway to some extent, but I don't want to have to rely on my poor level of skills unless I have to.

Today I finally got the byte reduction hack working! (took a lot longer than I thought it would to find the problem) So I just need to test it out a bit more to make absolutely certain it doesn't break anything else, then I can finally get to actually hacking the text again.

Thank you for posting an update on your progress. It is nice to know that you continue to work on this project, and that an eventual release remains a possibility. If you don't mind me asking, do you have a translator working with you for this project, or are you sufficiently skilled to handle both the hacking and the translation?

Well I had a translator, but we haven't communicated in a while so I'm not sure if he is still interested in helping or not. I do have enough already translated to get all the spells/abilities/equipment translated and a portion of the main story.
I'm gonna look into talking with my old translator/find a new one once I finish modifying all the control codes to single bytes (this should not be hard, I just need to move around what values equal what)

You seem to be handling the hacking fairly well, and that's more important than having a translator for now.
As for the current translator not having contacted you in a while, I hope you can get in touch with him. And anyway, I'm pretty sure someone will offer to help you if he gives up. Right? ._.

Another fan here! Please keep the updates coming... I played through the game up to the second disc, around where the translation on GameFaqs runs out. It would be incredible to be able to play the full game in English; even a little bit would help. Following along with a text file translation on a text-heavy game like this is a chore.
