Almost nobody likes this game, so almost nobody will care, but anyways...

In the town of Decatas, there's this government office.
You can pay 1000 Gold to this guy to make some guards go away, saving you about five seconds of traveling time over the free entrance on the side of town.
Except that when the guy says 1000, he really takes some random value in RAM, because Tecmo USA forgot a control code in the script (this can be exploited to get the Kustera party 9,999,999 Gold).
They probably never noticed, because 1000 bucks is kind of a lot to spend at this point in the game, and it's not like you'll be returning constantly. (it was only 200 Gamel in the Japanese version, if anybody cared)

So, I made a patch that restores the intended behavior, with an ever-so-slight text rewrite because I don't want to repoint the whole message.

I remember wanting to play this, and actually did and forgave the ancient graphics cause I was such a fan of RPG's then. Good work on fixing a bug noone knows about. Post it on the site for preservation I guess?

My first reaction to this was.... "somebody played Secret of the Stars long enough to find a bug?" :/

If the difficulty was balanced, it'd be a nice game, even counting the mega-cliche storyline and almost NES level graphics(Which are just fine on an NES, not on an SNES.)...

What's amazing about this game is that it came out near the end of the systems life. I think first generation SNES games had better graphics.

I was just about to say this looks actually nice for a NES game before I realized it isn't one  Shocked

Ditto. I have an old Nintendo Power mag showing a few shots of the game, and even back in the day I really didn't like the way it looked. I played it a bit when I got into emulation, and never really got into it.

Is it actually worth playing?

Aqutallion (i.e. the Japanese version) was released in late 1993. It may be that they developed it for FC and rushed it onto the SFC when they realized that FC games weren’t selling too hot... but I’m just conjecturing here.

woops, my bad then. I thought the game was released near the end of the systems lifespan cause thats when i seen it in my local game rental store. This definately must of started as a nes game. Theres no other logical excuse for those graphics. from those screenshots and the limited pallette used for each section of the sprites i can really see this being a nes game.

No. It's boring, doesn't give you enough EXP(The main cause of the difficulty), and has totally useless characters(Which also have the EXP problem) that they force you to use on a regular basis.

How about a retranslation and a little rom-hacking to rectify this game? Surely it's worth it.

Retranslation couldn't fix the story. It'd just make the plot better looking...
