Well, I've been kinda quiet on these forums lately but my ToP PSX translation project is still very much alive and kicking. Another mega-update is pending, but I'm not sure when exactly it'll be ready.

I thought I was finished with the menu hacking, but once again I found more and more ways to polish them. Everything's getting touched up in some ways. These are my favorites (before and after)

Status Menu

Before:

After:

The main point here was to restore the equipment designation text that I originally deleted for screen space (common sense would've told you what it belonged to anyway). It was originally to the left of the item name. I disapprove of long item names overlaying the portrait. This layout allows the text to come back.

Title Menu

Before:

After:

This is my favorite hack so far, and this is the menu that's gotten the most renovation. I didn't like how the left column looked so damn squished in the original. As an added plus, it even allows us the space to fit the full names of a few titles.

Hot damn those look good!  I'm glad you've put back the item location text.  Granted it might be common sense to people for what goes where, but I personally just like that little extra text.  Dunno why.

I also really like how you've reorganized the other menu.  It doesn't look bad, plus you said it allows the longer title names to be displayed.  That should be a plus in anyones book.

what game is that? is it a hack of the mario game for the original gameboy, or something else hacked into a mario game?

Did you rip that sprite from SMB3? Looks way better than the original. Smiley

No wonder it's your favorite (so far Wink).
I also hope changes like this will be doable whenever Phantasia's about to be on the way out the door and the time for other projects to get into the spotlight comes around.

It's pretty awesome when the final product of a fan translation project pretty much ends up being under both translations and improvements.

Now that's some good hacking! It makes it feel as though they know we can almost completely understand what they're saying.

Certainly does look good. I kinda feel bad for the translator, though, not having a text-based script to go from. Good luck. =D

By some miracle, we actually have all the Japanese skit dialogue in text form.

This hack will be looking even better when individual line-centering is implemented. They'll behave more like typical video subs in that manner. I've been given an ETA of sometime next week as Habilain is busy for the rest of this one.

I showed like 4 people at work your screenshots and they showed some interest.  Then I got to the subtitles on the skits and BLAM!  All four of them are now eagerly waiting.  Haha.
