I'm wanting to play with the graphics in Tetris Attack, but they're compressed.
How do I decompress graphics?

That needs to be in the links or Getting Started/FAQ section.

Nah, it needs to be a forum category, next to RTFM.

In case anyone doesn't catch my point...You can't just ask complex questions and expect to get a simple answer. If stuff like this was easy everyone would be doing it. Invest some time in some reading and put some effort so you at least know a little of what you are talking about...That way, we would be more inclined to help out someone with a track record of self-learning.

I don't know like, it's pretty geeky so I doubt everyone would do it if it was easy. Infact if it was easy you may find a lot less people doing it. That being said your right about the self learning thing and hard question=hard answers but do you not feel a couple more guides transending the Beginner->Intermediate bridge would be useful?

Because it's hard to tell where that bridge lies for different people. There are quick studies, there are slow learners...the curve goes all over the board, depending what you know already and how quick you are to follow from A to B to C, often abandoning malformed preconceptions in the process.

Why don't you give a few suggestions for these guides that don't exist that you'd like to see? I'd guess half of what you come up with doesn't exist for a reason. Hacking becomes very specific, very quickly, depending on game and task. Something you write on an advanced level probably won't apply to anything other than one game or specific instance of something. It's not useful to anybody else on a broad scale. You can of course try and do a concept only document with some advanced concepts and how they apply to multiple consoles, which I would like to do some day, but again, you'll still get people who won't be able to apply the concepts to the specific task then. It's kind of hard to explain why more advanced documents don't exist without having gotten there to understand why the document bridge just kind of ends.

Sorry it's been so long before a reply, just started uni last week so been a bit preoccupied. I'd like to see a nice "Introduction to Assembly" guide, a guide which walks you though making an amendment to a game at the assembly level, such as making Sonic jump higher or something to that effect. Don't get me wrong, I'm not looking for a "change this to this, this to this, this to this" sort of thing but rather "change this to this because this effects such and such as you can tell from this." Hope that makes sense. Also a document describing how to relate information from savestates to the orignal rom would be useful. There doesn't appear to be much on the topic of the Sega Master System either which is unfortunate but I guess that's just what I have to deal with since I'm a Sega fan and not a Nintendo fan :/ That may be the reason I've missed some of these guides if they do exist since so far I've been reading the Sega documention with the odd Nes/Snes file. EDIT - - "Parasyte gently introduces the FCEUd interface and ASM hacking techniques. Hackers will learn to modify the jump height of Samus in the original Metroid" maybe that's the sort of thing I'm looking for >_<. Really not sure how I missed the ASM stuff that is on here, guess it's been a busy few weeks with my mind on other things. Also it's a NES based document.

I'd say making a list of the more important or difficult-to-hack games that don't already have their compression format well documented might be an idea. Tetris Attack as the above post was saying is one, Mega Man 7 too, and that SNES sequel to Kirby's Star Stacker would need it's graphics hacked for a translation patch to work.

I know a lot of people who find this stuff overwhelming at first but if you actually sit down and read the tutorials provided, they really break down the basic, and some of the advanced stuff so that just about anyone who is willing to learn can understand. They don't teach you everything overnight, you have to be willing to put in a little time and maybe learn some things on your own once you have a basic grasp of it.
Most of the authors of a lot of those tutorials are regulars here and I'm sure would be happy to help if they know that you've put in some effort, and also know that if they start talking in a more "technical" manner, that they aren't wasting their time because they know you know what they are talking about.
This post wasn't directed any ONE person.
