Why are you using another person's hacked rom?

Wouldn't it be better (and easier) to use an unmodified copy of the game?

Yeah it probably would be easier but I can't find another one. It's a rare game, apparently. This is the only one i could find. I can't even find a Japanese one.

Someone did a very good "translation" of Green by copying its data into the English Blue ROM, you couldn't tell the difference between it and an actual translation of the Japanese ROM. Unfortunately I no longer have it, have no idea who made it (They released it at Acmlm's years ago), and it's not archived on this site. Sad

Edit: Of course, it would've been even better if they copied the Japanese Blue's data into the English Blue ROM, since that's the one that has differences to the US version. I've never really understood why there's any interest in a translation of Green when it's the same as our Blue sans some graphical differences...

Yeah just tried that 'Acmlm' in google. The sites still there but I can't find the green version.

If I find out how to edit the text in the green version I've got, I'll ask to put it up on this website once its done. It will probably be the only 'easily' available 100% PROPER English version of it. I'm not worried about how long it will take or anything. I got plenty of time plus it will be good experience for me for future hacks.

The only problem at the moment is that once the hex editor opens the ROM and a tablefile, there is still no readable English apart from "POKEMON GREEN" a couple of lines down from the top.

EDIT:

Apparently the Green Version has all 150 Pokemon (possibly mew also) without the need to trade between other versions to fill the pokedex.

Green's encounters are exactly the same as the US Blue. The US versions of the games took the graphical and map improvements from the Japanese Blue but used all the other data from the Japanese Red and Green. The Japanese Blue is the one with any differences to the US releases, it has different random encounters.

What kind of "map improvements" are we talking here? (As for the monster sprites, I think the original Red & Green had better ones. Tongue)

If I recall correctly, the floors of the last dungeon(s?) were overhauled. I remember reading it a long time ago when I was actually into the games, I never bothered playing the Japanese versions past the first few towns so I can't confirm it myself.

Pokémon graphics were definitely better in Red and Green, map graphics not so much, Blue really improved those.

So your saying I should translate a Japanese Blue Version into English because its the one with the differences. Although it would be helpful to know how to edit text in the first place. Still don't know where I'm supposed to see the readable English.
I want to do the green version because its still not available (easily) in Proper English

You need to make a table file and load it in your hex editor. There are documents in the getting started section that deal with the process.

Sorry I am not much help I am not a gameboy hacker, but I loaded the rom, and the table file in hexpose and there is no readable text, I can see the dialog in there, but I can't read it, all I can figure is there is something wrong with the suggested table files hex codes, they have to be incorrect for the ugly English version or something, I don't know how to find them myself either in gameboy roms.

Well I decide to look at the tile viewer in vboyadvance it read's

8a10=A 8a20=B 8a30=C so on and so forth.
I thought that it was a bit different from the nes.

Maybe RedComet and I were a little harsh with him but he asked for someone to find him the tools and a readme to hack the game in his first post. That's not following rules either. Not to mention he's obviously avoided the getting started section.

Ohrite cool..Thanks Me_Dave, I'll try finding out what numbers code for what letters. I've tried to use  searchrelative2 to find out what codes for what but it doesn't work.

When you load the game in a hexeditor (without loading a tablefile), a couple of lines down from the top it says "POKEMON GREEN" but apart from that it doesn't have any other readable text.

I have read the getting started section. I admit I only read the part about changing text but i did read it. I know what the numbers/letters stand for and how you change them about to get binary/decimals/hexadecimals. But as you can see Me_Dave is also having a problem with it.

I wasn't having that much of a problem, I don't want to hack pokemon green anyway, a long time ago I had a pre-made pokemon table file that I used for hacking pokemon red, and blue, I only used it for myself so I could get rid of a lot of the useless dialog for playing it on my palm pda witch is slow as hell, but I lost a hard drive, or two since then, and I don't have it anymore.

We don't provide table files for one reason if you don't know how to make one yourself you don't show much effort, and if your serious about rom hacking you need to learn the BASICs first, I started out with the nes it's a much easier system to hack, I would find a document on it because tables are easy if you know what to look for, but I don't for the gameboy every emulator that I have looked at  shows 4-character hex values per address, the nes only uses 2-character hex values, and I don't get it.

An example 8A10=A gameboy, 8A=A nes, I don't get it.   

Well there aren't any documents here on gameboy table making,or text hacking for gameboy, but I did find a doc on pointers at zophar's, I could not find one for table making tho.

Pokemon Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver and Crystal all us 8bit table values, starting at 0x80 if I'm not mistaken. The region 0x40-0x7F or similar contains control codes as well as - in the Japanese versions - the Dakuten/Handakuten versions of the characters.

If you're using/going to use a fresh Green ROM, just copy'n'paste the font from Red/Blue to the ROM and create a new table or use a pre-made R/B table (Zophar might have one). ALSO you should create a table based on the original Japanese font for finding/reading the actual game text using it.

Hope what I said is all correct, it's been a while since I hacked Pokemon Smiley
