I've been trying to replace a couple of STR files in the PSX US version of Resident Evil Director's Cut with the ones from the Japanese version. I followed this guide http://www.romhacking.net/docs/thepsxdoc2.txt the second method, without any major problem, as I've fiddled with other PSX titles before. But, for some strange reason, I can't get a working ISO out of the compilation (or one with the appropriate size - they slightly exceed the 700 MB, probably because the STR and XA files, when correctly extracted by sector with CDRWin, are always larger). I even tried some variations, but nothing, it's driving me crazy. Anyone has any suggestions, or know any other method (relatively simple - I'm no pro) to create a PSX ISO from the correctly extracted files. Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately no, but thanks anyway. I even tried to build an ISO from the directly extracted files, without tampering with them, but no luck. Also, the resulting image was almost 100 MB larger than the folder with the extracted files, so there's no way i could burn it directly to a CD. I imagine it would work for other games, but I remember reading how Capcom games were almost untouchable. I guess they were right... But it's possible, how hard can it be to build a simple image file?! Any other suggestions? Simply replacing the STR files with CDmage works fine, but unfortunately the imported files are larger than the originals, so they get truncated. Frustrating...

Doesn't this game have a dummy file? Tried making the dummy file smaller so the STRs fit?

This game was translated into Portuguese. You could ask whoever hacked the game.

Doesn't this game have a dummy file? Tried making the dummy file smaller so the STRs fit? Yeah, I thought about it. But first I need to take care of the ISO building, if I can't get it to work, it really doesn't matter if it fits or not... This game was translated into Portuguese. You could ask whoever hacked the game.
Yeah, I know. I've been on some Brazilian boards and checked some documents but it appears the translation was done by inserting subtitles and altering the TIM files to later reinsert them using CDmage, as they were the same size. So that's doesn't really help me. But this has actually been done before, by Zorlon at Emuparadise, only he used the Dual Shock version, and the soundtrack sucks, and he used the Intro from the PC version, therefore the quality is not as good. But even he had to cut down the STRs so they could fit. Not just because of the size, but because of the LBA, or so he says. http://www.epforums.org/showpost.php?p=641559&postcount=8 I would ask him more details, but for some reason, even though I'm already registered at the site, I never got an activation e-mail. But anyway, even when I extract the files from a legitimate CD and try to build an ISO out of them without even touching them, I can't get a working one, not with this game. So that's my main concern, I need to figure out a way before I move on to the file replacement.

I would ask him more details, but for some reason, even though I'm already registered at the site, I never got an activation e-mail. Simply the game doesn't use the CD toc for loading STR movies. You need to find them in the proper exe (MOVIE.EXE?) and replace them AFTER you have the whole ISO rebuilt.

As I said, I can't do it even when I left the files untouched.

Apparently psx format is not a very simple thing.

Build CD+stripiso.

Build CD+stripiso. Already tried. It's not that I don't know how to do it, it's just that I can't make it work with this game.

Again: it's because you only rebuilt the ISO and didn't update the game's internal LBA/size structure. Creating a Psx compatibile ISO is not the only thing that matters.

And how do I do that before I rebuild the ISO?

Simple: you don't do it before. Do it once the ISO is complete and use programs like ISO Buster for locating the new LBA values, then replace the updated file using CDMage or whatever you prefer.

That also didn't work. I think Zorlon is right - the problem is the LBA. This game has a strict LBA reference to the files so if one the files doesn't match the LBA the game just doesn't work. That mean I can't add any larger files. So I thought I would slightly crop the films, by extracting only the "middle sectors" with CDRWin. I checked the files it's exactly what I wanted, with the same sector size as the original ones. However, every time I try to replace them with CDmage, I get a message saying "Imported file must be RIFF CDXA type". Damn, I'm so close. Any ideas? How can I can add this type of header to an STR file?
