This is going to sound strange, but did I have any part in translating this game?  I seem to remember parts of the script showing up on MO's board two or three years ago.  Along with some fugly screenshots.   Tongue

... I don't remember. I think Haeleth did most of the gruntwork, and I know I have some saved TR pages somewhere. :p

All but the NES versions of I & II, I think.

To answer your question, I came in hopes of getting some help figuring FEIDIAN out to use on SSRPG, but I've had no luck on that score.  That whole pattern thing fries my frontal lobe.  I can use the neogeo16 definition to get something vaguely akin to the desired results, but I need 4bpp.

I feel your pain. Anything not 1bpp confuses the hell out of me in FEIDIAN. I want to try and code a new version that's easy to use, but first I need to understand how the old one works. Sad

You know what you may want to try to help learn? Open up Photoshop and recreate bitplane graphics. The concept is easy. You've got multiple simple 1bpp layers stacked on top of each other.

You want to learn the different formats, right? So how about this. Draw the 1bpp layers out in Photoshop for any example you're working with. Now, you can actually stack them on top of each other yourself and see exactly how the final image is generated. Hell, you can even see how the colors work if they are somewhat transparent and you set the palette up.

You can manipulate and size these layers however you need to to recreate what's happening with any format and size.

Your suggestion intrigues me, but I'm a relative novice at Photoshop.  Might you know of a tutorial for such a procedure?  Thanks in advance.

Watching the second season of The Shield, I thought "Armadillo" meant something totally different.  Grin

I'd do both, myself.
