So I finally managed to get far enough in Armadillo to insert the script. But, I've got a question. I was messing around and I inserted this bit of text...

The script originally had this as "Armadillo's friend, Martian." But... maybe it's the caffeine, but I decided to change that to what it is now. I realized then that the entire script is full of things to make fun of. I mean, the main antagonist is an overweight armadillo called FATMADILLO. The script isn't entirely mocking itself in its original form, but dammit, it's corny and it's just BEGGING for a mocking. The world is full of sushi bars staffed by horses... The main character is a TEXAN Armadillo... There's even a sushi bar in MEXICO. With Tabasco sauce. C'mon!

So here's where you guys step in. Should I do a straight up, boring translation? Or do I subtly poke fun at the game itself, and the stuff that's going on in it? It wouldn't be too much work, the game is silly enough as it is, but I don't want to get accused of going all Working Designs on the game or something.

Thoughts?

Since the game doesn't take itself seriously there's no reason why your script should, make it entertaining to read.

If you have the space, you could always go for "Hey, it's Armadillo's favorite Martian!"

"More importantly, Tim...I think I need an electrician!"

I'd go with that. Sometimes the subtle jokes are the best, and you can kill them by pointing them out.

I agree. It should be a fun script, though.

'I bet FATMADILLO fucks like a tiger.'

You could could take that answer to go either way. I'll leave it up to you. Wink

I gotta agree, make some jokes, but don't make it anything too over the top. ^_^

I suggest going the inbetween route, throw in some jokes but keep it the same as well. Never EVER go to either of the extremes.

The biggest thing to worry about is keeping the same TYPE of humor. If the original humor is subtle, go subtle. If it uses puns, go with puns. As long as you keep the same humor type, then you have a lot of leeway.

Don't go too far, but it's begging to be a funny localisation. To make it funny wouldn't be to alter the game that much, but the same jokes won't work, so you have to do a lot of re-writing. Since there are already humourous bits, why not add more. I'm in full agreement that it could use self-mockery in the translation to great effect.

Well, by know, you know my stance on localization... and this game seems to be begging for liberties to be taken.  I say go for it, and tinker away to make the script as funny as possible without straying from the original meaning/context.
