Topic: FF Mystic Quest (Read 2915 times)

Taarna23 and I would like to do a translation of Mystic Quest. However, the text itself looks like it is compressed in the ROM. I can easily make out a table and script and such, but in order for us to finish the project, we'd need to replace the Japanese font tiles with English ones. *nods* Fonts are usually stored in 2BPP format, occasionally in 1BPP. (There's a good reason for this. Fonts are typically displayed using the 2BPP background layer; leaves the 4BPP layers for all the flashy 16-color artwork. ^_^)

Perhaps I should use a different graphics editor, but I'm pretty sure I tried TLP, TM, and YY-CHR.

I took a quick peek. I'm just wondering what kind of rom you're using? I downloaded the English Rom (there is one) and at the same location it had some different graphics. I might be willing to help you on this, just a matter of what's needed. Do you have any string offsets yet that are commonly displayed? (Names, attacks, menus)?

Umm, if you mean like the menu and whatnot? I can tell you some of the commonly used words on Saturday, I'd have to go home and look at the ROM myself to see.

I do know most of the basics, I think it's just the terminology I need to learn.
If you tell me what "string offset" means, I've probably already encountered them, and just didn't know what the hell they were. ^_~
But, in case no one feels like it, I think I've downloaded pretty much every doc I thought I'd need (anything not HORRIBLY complex, ASM stuff and such).

offset ~ address (note that it's not a = sign, but that shouldn't concern you now). Tauwasser wants to know a string address from the ROM so he can let loose some breakpoint magic

Offsets are numbers specifying the location of certain items in relation to a base address. Sometimes that base address is zero, which makes offsets equal to addresses (example: file offsets).

Well, first you should tell me what rom and what version you are using. I only bothered to look once and I only found FF MQ 1.0 E and FF MQ 1.1 E (bad) and FF MQ 1.1 E (with some weird intro that makes snes9x go spew...)
And yes, I would like to have an offset of a phrase, name, text etc that is displayed often (or can be triggered more than once).
