Basically, over the summer I started fiddling around with various things in romhacking. I want to do a translation for my first official "project". I decided that since I had an old rom of Ys III on the NES lying around, I would do that, especially seeing that I loved Ys III on SNES, and having played that a few dozen times I know the game pretty well.
However, after browsing RH I found out someone already DID a complete translation of Ys III. Is it a taboo kinda thing to do a translation that someone has already finished? I was really counting on doing Ys III as a intro project (plus, I've already got a table, font, and whatnot ready. I'm just waiting on a friend of mine to finish translating the script, so I can start hacking).
Thanks for putting up with my newbishness, I'll be frequenting the board now that I have time, so hopefully I'll be able to learn as much as possible.

It's not taboo, but I'll kick your ass if you translate it again. Seriously though, the game is EVIL in the sense that there's not enough space for the entire script. I had to cut out about 10k of text, and do a fuckton of substring compression (by hand, mind you!) to make sure things fit. I'm still waiting for the guy that's doing the Ys PC translations to lend me his Oath in Felghana script so I can adapt it to the NES game...

Eek. Maybe Ys III isn't a great idea, after all. I didn't know YOU did that translation, I just know someone did. Probably should've at least looked at your readme, to see what you had to do. Not a great beginner project, ne?
For the first project, I'd like to do Akira then. Are there any known problems with that?
Okay, next question. A friend of mine and I want to do the BS Chrono Trigger library. The translation should be the easy part, but when I looked in TLP and TM at the rom itself, the font tiles are...as I would say, screwy. Not only are they in two parts (I don't know the technical term for that, but I've dealt with it before, as in the PSSM:AS translation), but they're mixed up inside the tile itself. I'll make a screenshot and post it on Saturday if you can't look at it or don't understand what I mean.
Once you understand what I mean, or look at the above mentioned screenshot, what exactly would I have to do to the rom to make an english font?
Plus, it's not an RPG, so to make the font I'd have to Relative Search for it, right? I suck at Relative Searching, any tips? >.<

Well, I'm doing Akira, and it's nearly finished. Much like Ys III, there are horrible space issues. I had to make use of DTE and a display hack to allow more characters on the screen.

Not a great beginner project, ne? Considering it took me four years to finish? Not bloody likely. Akira was another project I wanted to do for years, but it's way beyond my own skills. danke already mentioned he's nearly done, which is great. As for the BS game... I dunno, I'm afraid of Square games. >_>

Will you find the time to make an update on your site? I'm especially curious about your PC-98 projects and the McDonald game. Not saying I don't appreciate the news about Akira or be overly disappointed if you didn't make progress on other fronts .

Ok, so maybe we won't do Akira. Maybe I'll do it just for the experience. It just comes down to whoever FINISHES first. =P (Note: mostly sarcasm, I doubt I'll finish the project before you do). I figured that there would be space issues (hell, is there a translation that DOESN'T have space issues? Japanese itself can say much more with little space compared to English...). I figure'd I'd wind up trying some DTE stuff, but it's probably beyond my comprehension at this point. As far as the BS Chrono Trigger thing goes, I've got a picture of it up. I apologise for the megaupload link, but I don't have access to the campus servers, as I'm not at school. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=0Y3P5V7SAlso, the same friend and I want to do one of the Sailor Moon Puzzle games for the SFC. However, I'm pretty sure the font is either done in a wild way, or is compressed. Here is a picture of where I THINK the font is. Anyone have an explanation? http://www.megaupload.com/?d=ARXWYUZ1

No, but I have a suggestion... use Photobucket or Imageshack, Megaupload doesn't like non-Americans.

Eh, tommorrow when I'm on campus I'll upload them to my personal site.
Also, is there some sort of compression scheme in FF - Mystic Quest? A friend of mine and I were thinking of translating the Japanese version (yes, I know it was mostly US made, but there ARE differences in the two.)

Stop looking at the font in 4bpp mode...
This is why I don't agree with labeling bit plane modes like this in tile editors. Disregard the fact that it says 'SNES'. That means nothing. The font is stored in a lower bit plane type. Try a 1bpp or 2bpp mode. In fact, try them all and you'll see the differences. 1bpp mode will take right down to a byte by byte basis.

You saying I should do that for just one specific game, or all of them?
I read that somewhere, and started trying that on many roms, but I don't think I had any results from doing that. I'll give it a try when I get home though.

All of them. The labels mean nothing. If you can't find the graphics in one BPP mode, try another and another, until you've exhausted all of your options. If you still can't find them after looking through all of the modes, the graphics might be compressed.

Well, would that also be true in the case of the BS Chrono Trigger Library? I mean, the font is THERE, it's just...mixed up and cut in half. -.-
Would switching the BPP format help with THAT? >.<

You could try it, you know. Or try scrolling through the rom one byte at a time (the +/- buttons in YY-CHR).
