can anyone translate the full metal alchemist ROM for the gba? i realize u probably get people like me all the time that come here and immediately request something, and i apologize for that

We don't get a lot of people like you these days, but for starters, there's a "Translation Requests" topic over on the Gaming Discussion board, and for seconds, many of us have our own personal projects to work on.

So instead of dropping your two cents and crossing your fingers, why don't you learn the craft yourself? Start with a few simple hacks and work your way up.

Some knowledge of the language is required for technical reasons alone, but you don't need to be able to translate the game yourself: a lot of projects are two-man jobs or more, with one person handling the script translation and the other one reprogramming - hacking - the game itself. Have you ever done any programming?

You have something, at the very least. ^_^

All a processor is in the end is a very sophisticated, very quick abacus with a bunch of features you don't see on your classic "string of beads" model. Memory is a bunch of numbered shelves for you to put numbers on, and as your second helper, you have what's called "the stack". Think of the stack like a stack of dishes: "first in, first out" (FIFO, as it's called). When you "push" a number onto the stack, assuming nothing weird happens in your code, it stays there until you "pull" it back off. If you push value 1 and value 2 onto the stack, you can pull 'em back off in reverse order. The basics of ASM are easy to grasp, and there's nothing quite like implementing an ASM hack - especially a crazy one - and see it work just as you figured it would.

But that's a bit far off. You should start off with something basic on one of the older Nintendo systems, if for no other reason than they're the most well-researched: most of the questions you'll have will already have been answered by someone else.

I haven't looked at FMA, so I don't know. Seeing how it's a GBA title, I would guess between a 6 and an 8.

Part of the hard work will be if the game uses a 16x16 fixed-width font. It's fine for Japanese text, but English needs a lot more room: ideally, you'd want to hack the game so it uses an 8x16 font instead, or ideally, a proportional font (or "VWF", "variable-width font" as we call it).

I'd recommend you practice with something simple, like an older title for NES, SNES or Game Boy. "Give a man a fish..."

i dont kno then... im already in the process of making a flash game, i guess im just gonna have to wait for someone else to feel like doin it, or they release it in english and make a rom of it

That's right. Fan translations should be considered the last option for those games that the industry, for whatever dumbass reason, doesn't want to bring Stateside.

Otherwise, you buy them legit. Think of it as a karmic matter.
