Aha, my satellite internet is talking to me again, so I guess I have no excuse but to give this mini effort a second look. Not as if these games are going anywhere anyhow.

I'm a little aprehensive about what good I will likely be able to achieve, but I might as well try, or besmirch my honor.

Now where were those papers I couldn't afford to download before...

edit: erhum, just for the record, that was a rhetorical question.

I think I recall a PS2 anthology being planned for release in japan when I began thinking about hacking the genesis rom. Off hand I imagine it has been released by now.  I have a fair amount PS2 experience (patching and graphics plugin development) and know the tools exist, so it would be a lot easier, but I think it would be more meaningful to correct the original rom... but the PS2 is a more realistic option, and would allow me to play the game as I would like to.

If anyone can point me to a bittorrent or something I will look into the PS2 rom first. I prefer to play in japanese and I don't have the time for dialogue "overdubbing" obviously, so forget about that... but as I've stated I'm interested in correcting the apparent oversight which renders two-handed weapons obsolete and maybe just for fun monkey with the general computation routines to make the game a little more challenging, though I don't think fixing the two-handed weapons would effect the challenge level too much one way or the other.

Obviously I'm in no big hurry, just something I'd like to get done before I kick the bucket.

You cannot request rom or ISO images of games outside of the rom thread.

This is your first warning.

I'm really not interested in any remakes, as I can only bet they will've turned out severely retarded. But I'm pretty sure there were releases slated for an anthology type straight PS2 port of the original 16bit games on a single disc perhaps sans IV... which is the version I would be interested in working with outside the megadrive rom.

Still, that said... any good screenshots of the "2nd generation" version of PSII? The PSI remake really didn't sit well by me, but I'm still curious... especially since the link provided stated quote, "The game has been given a major graphical overhaul, and easily stands among the best looking 2D RPGs of any generation."

yep, there's a Japanese compilation and a trilogy was supposed to be brought over by conspiracy entertainment. That didn't happen,  II-IV are however included on the Sega classics collection.

Thanks for the legwork!

It does look a lot better than what I expected, but just falls a good  ways short of the amount of personality the original has going for it. It woud've been nice to have least seen an attempt to revive a retro 80s anime look for the new cutscenes/animation or something if the remake was going to be so true to form. Or at least more consistent artwork if nothing else. The flaws of the original game appear amplified in the remake to a large extent. Still it does look surprisingly playable, if only I could spare more time. Its sad when games are remade in a lame attempt to appease the requirements of a new generation of corn fed gamers particular tastes, rather than trully soaking some love into the game while faithfully leveraging modern technological developments. The necessary quality control for a classic just doesn't appear to be there sadly. The original illustrations were much better to boot。

Surely the two-handed weapon bug has been fixed / mitigated in this edition. I can't recall what I was able to find out about the original compilation (I think it was for the SegaSaturn)

Its sad that the two-handed weapons are just completely unuseable in all respects.

I have the Saturn collection (that includes PS 1-4), and as far as I can tell, they're all direct ports--no bugfixes or anything. So everything (bugs and otherwise) that are present on the consoles should still be in the Saturn collection ports.
