9 years ago, I think I coined the term "variable-width fonts" as it applies to translation hacks.  Since I think we (RPGe on FF5) were the first ones to do it, the name stuck.  I regret that a lot, because as someone later pointed out to me, it already had a term: proportional font.

By the way, the font I used for FF5 came from an old DOS paint program called NeoPaint.  It still exists, but obviously for Windows now too.

Ah, Barubary! Long time no see ... erm, chat. I used to bug you a bit with questions regarding your 65c816 knowledge about 7-8 years ago on IRC. It was your work on FF5 that inspired me to keep on learning and get to where I am today. You have my gratitude for that.

So then, how have things been going for you?

I kinda brought her back with a post on GameFAQs. Surprised me to find the originator of the FFV translation patch posting on the FFVA boards.

BTW.

Not really the point of this topic...

I haven't touched ROM hacking in years other than a 3 week thing in late 2004 where I made this:

Of course, there's no reason to finish it now, since it seems Square is doing the translation right this time.

You did some nice work there, though I personally prefer "Clule".

(Probably the second time I'll change the default name in an FF; last time was FFVI, normalizing all the names from those Pocket Monsters-issue caps.)

I use VWF and 'variable-width' because it offers a TLA, which 'proportional' does not. >.>

That, and while "variable-width" is slightly kludgier (plus being a syllable longer), it describes what it is. <_<

Same for me... on top of that, I don't really understand how could Kururu become Cara (in italian or spanish the pronunciation is completely different: カーラ). O_o

Hmm, well that's too bad. Nice of you to stop by, however. Most of the older veterans just vanish for good, it seems.

I'm just happy he stopped talking about Sylvanian Families.

But seriously, I've come across others who are as repetitive, although I'm unaware of any official psychological classifications for this behavior. ADD doesn't sound like a very good guess, he's definitely got plenty of attention focused on his projects.

Hehe, when I first played Chrono Trigger (which was in English), I figured out that Magus (ma-oh, evil king, etc.) was going to be a playable character because his name wasn't all capitals like all the NPC's/enemies.  Ted probably translated it that way then Square changed it in CT because of people who whined about "FF3" using capitals.  I would've been fine with it if the game automatically capitalized character names before a colon.

It wasn't the capitalization that annoyed me, it was "Terra" that did. >_<

As for the character names, we never saw an authoritative name list.  Someone finally figured out what クルル was meant to be =)

Off topic, but does this topic and the translation board show up as having unread posts even after you click the "Mark As Read" button for anyone else besides me?
