Topic: Japanese Text Help (Read 1 times)

I'm translating a Japanese Mega Drive game into English. I've figured out where all the text is located in the ROM, but need help with some of the translation. Thanks in advance if anyone can tell me what this says. It should be related to modem/online play...

Unless I change some assembly, I'm limited to 15 letters/spaces. "Modem Not Set" is the best I can think of that will fit.
There is some extra space in the ROM, but here's the assembly that loads the ROM address for the start of the text:
00:1218 41 FA LEA $0038(PC),A0
This will load a value of $1252 into A0. $1252 is the starting address for the text. I can change the "$0038(PC)" to a higher number, but the extra space is beyond where it can reach.
I guess I could change some more assembly to jump to where the extra space is, but to be honest, I think anyone seeing "Modem Not Set" can figure out what it means.
Thanks again for the help guys. I'll have some more screen shots in the next few days that I'll need some more help with.

Well, it’s just an incredibly lazy way of saying “Modem not turned on or disconnected†no matter how you slice it :V

This is my first real attempt at translating a game, and I've got a question for anyone here...
Is it considered good practice to stay as close as possible to the actual translation, or translate it into what would be considered "correct" English, or is it entirely up to the person doing the translation?
For example, in my first post, the text translated into "Modem is not set". Some suggestions for "correct" English were: "Modem not detected", "Modem not turned on" or "Modem disconnected". To keep this translation as simple as possible (using the same (or less) number of letters/characters), I'd like to change it to "Modem not set". Would that be considered a bad job of translating, or is any translation a good thing, as long as it gets done?

If you check the Wikipedia article on translation, you will find that the argument actually extends back into ancient times. The best strategy is to ask yourself why you are doing this, and go with that philosophy. There is no right answer.

"No Modem" might be another concise way to phrase the error message. "Modem Not Set" is kinda cryptic.
Anyway, yeah, if you're just messing around, you can just Babelfish it to the point it's playable. If you want to make something release-worthy, though, the ideal approach is to make a proper localization. And yes, this may involve a lot of agonizing over seeming trivialities like the wording of message boxes.

I went with "No Modem Found". This started out as a project for someone else. He only wanted a small part of the text translated. There's not really very much text in the whole game (mostly menus), so I decided since I've already figured out where most of the text is in the ROM, I might as well translate as much as I can. Should be a relatively easy first project. I've tried to cut down on the screen size so they don't take up as much room on the server. Here's the next screen that I need translated...

Do us all a favor and stop saving your screenshots in BMP format. Use GIF or PNG. Your screenshots are freakin' huge because BMP is an evil format and should never be used on the Internet.Edit Play Mode Select a screen.
