Crap. I can't remember. It was definitely on the right side, though. I can try to find out.

Also, no I did not know about the stage select. I found an old state and used it to get a password from a point before the error occurred, and then I removed the patch. I'll use that level-select to help me find the spot where the error occurred.

EDIT: I can't get the stage-select code to work. It tells me that the password is wrong.

Well, I've used it myself, so I don't know what to tell you except to check that you got the hirigana correct.  You used the code at http://www.gamefaqs.com/nes/578622-eggerland-meikyuu-no-fukkatsu/cheats , right?

I just found out Lala's old name is Lara  Shocked

Should it be Lara or Lala in the translation?

This does not compute.  Did you hear an audio interview with the developers of the time, or see it written in Romanji somewhere?  Does this mean the protagonist is supposed to be Loro?

ror.  Wink

Ask BRPXQME, he has a fantastic knowledge of the history of the Japanese language, and he's given a reason for this specific case before, if I can find the post I will link.

I did? I have no recollection of that :<

Best to stick with “Lala”. It’s supposed to mirror “Lolo”. Now technically, there was a “Quest of Rara”, but there are a number of reasons that it’s safe to ignore one-off Japanese-supplied romanizations. And since Lololo and Lalala are pretty much based off Lolo and Lala, it really gets to be hard to justify changing Lala to Lara.

The thing is, there is no difference in Japanese between ‘r’ and ‘l’ (technically it has neither; its ‘r’ sound is generally a flap, not like the ‘r’ present in RP or Midwestern American English). So while there is no difference between Lala and Lara in the Japanese phonological system (represented as ララ), you pretty much have to go off something else to tell whether it’s better to go with one or the other. And since we know she is a pair with Lolo, you go with Lala, because that’s what makes the most sense. (Figuring out ambiguous romanization possibilities isn’t always this clear cut, though).

You did not, my apologies, it's one thing that you didn't cover in the massive wall of Japanese language historical text. Regardless you explained it much better than I could, so kudos to you.

Should the title be Eggerland or Adventures of Lolo?

Well, it's your translation, so you should call it whatever you like!

Of course, since that other translation patch called it Egger Land, it may just cause confusion if you use a different name - but that shouldn't stop you if that's what you want.

The proper format for releasing a hack is to create some type of patch that can be used with a patching application to apply your hack. For example, the most common type is IPS. Look for an application here, we have them.

Also, supply a readme file with your hack that lists details of your translation hack. You can also submit the translation hack to the database here on romhacking.net.

Doing everything that I described does not take too much effort.
