Topic: Changing Names of Characters (Read 1 times)

k..
I want to know how the community would react to changing a really really lame gay (non-existent) character name in (J) to something close but more hero-esque.
Remember when Tina was changed to Terra? The reason for that was because the name Tina sounded to "normal" right?
This is the opposite problem as the name in the J-version really makes me cringe just from its onomatopoeic properties.
How many people are going to raise hell if they find out the name was changed from the Japanese? It isn't a game where the player can name his own characters so..
I'm not going to say what game it is from but what if the character's name was "Poo" or "Faa" or "Gee" in the Japanese version? Cool to change to - i dunno - "Pore", "Fahd", "Gelv" etc??? Would it really be a huge deal?

Some name changes are great. But if you, for instance, since you used it as an example, changed Poo's name from Earthbound into something else, I'd probably be pissed. It depends on the circumstances. ~DS |

Can anyone think of any games where this name switching has been done in the past (and appreciated)?

Still have my air freshener that came in the box too  Can't remember the story though to save my life except there were aliens.. and ESP...?? Have not played Mother 1 or 3 (YET!!)  |

Yeah I know. Just clarifying that by Earthbound you meant Mother 2. Air Freshener --> http://starmen.net/merchandise/misc/airfreshener.phpThe description says that you only get this by sending in one of the cards so I must have done that... I never took the plastic off. Dang.. I wonder if I brought it with me or if it's back in Michigan gathering mildew...? |

Sometimes it's not big of a deal. Like, in Dragon Quest IX, there was a Character called Sandy who got changed to Stella. I didn't really mind it too much (despite having been so much for used to Sandy, having played the Japanese version a ton of times already). Other name changes made me want to go on rampage: Dharma Temple which has always kept its name in the old Dragon Warrior localizations suddenly got changed to Alltrades Abbey, and Ruida, the girl from the tavern, was always Ruida in Dragon Warrior III, but they decided to call her Patty now. And another funny thing from the same game- the main inn now has a name- when it never had one to begin with! |

She was actually called Luisa in the original NES translation, I think. Then they went to Ruida with the GBC version.
It's been a while though, so I could be remembering wrong.
Either way, Patty is a name change they did solely to satisfy a cheap alliteration. I can't complain *too* much, since from what I've read the Japanese version has its own share of (Japanese) puns and alliteration, and they're trying to maintain that feel I suppose... still, it's annoying when it affects a series convention like that. Surely they could have come up with an 'R' alliteration.

It tends to be less acceptable in fan translations. Usually I don't really care since it doesn't make that much of a difference -- in Cross Edge, all the characters with Japanese names were changed (Mikoto -> Miko, Touya -> Troy, Yuuto -> York, Irma -> Mimi, Elma -> Cece). The last one is kind of dumb, I guess...

They've used Patty in localizations before, like DQ7 I think. Not sure if she was Rudia in the Japanese version of that or not. It's most an excuse for the alliteration though yeah.
Alltrades really pisses me off for some reason. Dharma and Rudia are traditional damnit.

I guess when translating from Japanese they're FORCED to change names - because even spelling the Romanji equivalent is changing the name.
There is just SO MANY VG characters with names variants it pisses me off. Almost half of FF characters comes under 2 different names floating arround from various fan and official translations. The name you saw first is probably the one you're gonna use tough. Doesn't matter to me how many people call Aeris "Aerith" because this is suppose to be her true japanese name or wathever, it will still always be Aeris to me (just one example among one million).
A major probem was in Golden Sun where all characters were COMPLETELY renamed for the French version I played, and it's not like slight changes but total changes - so I can't understand anything Golden Sun related on english websites without major headaches.

Yeah her name totally has the katakana for th in it right??
People can't even get over Eggman or Peach so I doubt the FF name rage wars in particular will ever be "solved" in any way.
