Hacking a game's text to parody the storyline in any way the hacker sees fit. Alot of the times this winds up with games filled with profanity and lame jokes, though. But when done correctly, it can be quite funny. ^_^

it isn't always this way, but it's been a trend that they start off as a heavy text hack for the first section and might be unchanged in the end. Also usually not done by experienced hackers so they take all the existing events and poses in a game and try to turn it into something COMPLETELY different with only changing the text and not the movement. That in and of itself takes a little imagination, but these hacks are usually a disappointment, but as DS said, sometimes good for a laugh. (not usually worth a whole playthrough though, but I suppose every hack is different)
is it just me or did there used to be a whole lot more of those? I've prolly just been hanging out at RHDN for too long. It seemed to be quite the fad for awhile way back in the days.

I done this many many moons ago when I was right into Shining Force 2 but I didn't know about rom hacking then so I just made page and page of screen shots so it read more as a comic of the game. It was also just made of rubbish jokes and profanity although no actual swearing mostly just discussions of rape and pillaging. You know it is probably still floating about on Angelfire somewhere....
It's funny this topic should come up because I was reading more about BigNailCow's work and it got me thinking about the very same thing.

A Spoof, in theory, could be a humorous take on (or parody of) the original game's story line. Unfortunately, most "spoofs" out there were created by individuals who find humor in profanity and other such teenage humor... and most of them are incomplete as well. <Self Promotion> Posting this here may result in more hits and publicity than I am yet ready for, but here is the link to my incomplete webpage, which hosts my (complete) spoof: http://devilsjockstrap.wikidot.com/ff5spoofIt is my attempt to reclaim the term "spoof" from those who have tarnished it with juvenile humor. If you are at all interested, please read the readme file (directly linked-to on that page). </Self Promotion>

If it is complete, why not submit it here?

I intend to, but I want to finish my website first... and everytime I sit down to work on my website, I end up working on some other project instead.
Maybe I'll work on it _right now_ though, since I'm home from work on a snow day and all...

Well, that was the goal anyway. It's up to the users to decide whether it's good or not :-) but I specifically set the bar higher than most of the "spoof" stuff out there.

I originally got a kick out of those vulgar spoof type hacks I saw on zophars domain. But the novelty wore off. It didn't really keep me playing to the end.

I'd say you succeeded. I don't really have the patience to play through an entire RPG anymore, but your writing makes me want to keep playing just to see what they say next. It's hilarious. It almost makes me want to try doing a parody hack of my own, actually.

My thing is, when it comes to my EB0 hack (The hack that has FF characters in it) I'm thinking of either having a dark or comedy theme to it. Maybe I'll try to pull it off by throwing both in the hack. But yeah, since I gotta sick sense of humor anyway these kinda hacks make me laugh (and gets my mind off of my prollems even if it's for a few minutes to a few hours).

@googie jokes are most devious when someone isn't sure if it's supposed to be funny, or if it just was.

You're right...
I'll see what I can conjure up then, last time I touched that hack I think I was looking for a big rocket or sumthin.
