What does this have to do with DQ5?

We might see an official translation. So there is hope of DQ5 coming to America in its original form/presentation (It occurred to me after reading DaMarsMan signiture)

Pretty sure I read this somewhere else, but I wonder if it's possible to buy the rights to some older games and release the translations on the VC?

It'd be nice to have some of the original assembly sources. Just think of what you could do.

RedComet:

That would be awesome. I just can't see them allowing this though. I'd love to be surprised as being wrong. I don't even know how to find out who still owns the rights to most non Nintendo games or any games by companies that either do not exist or are no longer the same company etc.. We may able to go to those companies as ask for those rights outside of distributing on the VC at least.

DaMarsMan:

Some information that has been leaked over the years though seems to point to the fact that companies no longer have the source code anymore to many of these classic games. I wonder how many companies actually still have the source to the old games.

I agree with DaMarsMan decision, it will help keep the project in motion. Who doesn't hate getting their hopes up, just to be disappointed by another dead project  Tongue. I just hate hearing that "real life" got in the way, I suppose that means prior to that the individual was not experiencing "real life".

A retranslation shouldn't be necessary at all, if a good editor looks over the work. In fact, I think the editor is more vital to a professional/quality work, than a the translator or writer. Writers have been known to change styles of writing in the middle of a book (EX: Mark Twain). "Good" translators tend to error on the side of accuracy, rather than readability. An editor can be unbiased and simply focus on the flow and unity of a work, rather than its content.

Hello.  I'm the other hacker type guy working with Damarsman. (Made the mapfile decrypter, inplace injector, and compressor that compresses better than Square Enix's compressor, etc) *horn tooting* :p  Might as well throw in my 2 cents.

Though the method being using ATM isn't optimal, I think Damarsman can pull it off.  He is being very meticulous with the translation "transplanting", and I would think in the end he would check the entire script and make sure everything is consistent.

We did have a high quality translator for a while doing pro bono work, but he got a paying job and had to quit the team.  I wouldn't mind hiring a translator if that is what it would take, but for something this massive I'm pretty sure it will be expensive.

Oh, and hi Neil, long time not see ^.^

As for Square releasing VC games, Super Mario RPG is the only one I can think of at the moment that's been confirmed.  I'm sure there will be others at some point since they're on the list of supporters (I'd sure hope that's not the only one, at least).

Hudson's reported to be seeking rights for some of the old Turbo stuff (companies that are now defunct, for example), so I'd assume it's entirely possible for someone else to do so as well.  Finding the right people, getting them to talk to you seriously about it, and coming up with the $$$ might prove a bit more difficult for a lone person though vs. a company like Hudson who's well established in the market.
