Those JROK encoders are actually pretty amazing, I use one on my HDTV (CRT) and it's barely indistinguishable from playing my Genesis on an RGB monitor (an old Commodore one). I mean you really have to get right up to the TV to notice any difference; from a few feet away they look identical.

If you want to translate Beggar Prince you'd have better luck with the PC version. It's out there if you look, and it's probably more doable than any Genesis game ever would be Tongue

I'm the author of Eisfrei - as noted by Azkadellia it only works with Herzog Zwei. It is open source so if you wanted to use some of the code to create an editor for Beggar Prince that would OK (so long as it meets the requirements of GPL v2).

I've only worked on ROM editors for two Genesis games and in each case finding and editing the text was the easy part. Both were in English and had un-encoded text though. It took a couple minutes to find in a hex editor. I don't think this will be nearly that easy, actually it sounds like a complete nightmare.

It'd be likely as hard a job as any other CH game for Genesis. I spent forever trying to find someone to hack one for me to translate. It's not a case of finding any hacker, they have to be REALLY good at 68k.

I'm guessing the OP has quit already though. I was like this when I first wanted to figure out ROM hacking, and it's the sad truth that it's not a matter of just opening up a rom and seeing the whole game script, copy it and translate it and paste it back in. It's MUCH more than that, and unless you want to really get to know the Genesis very well, you'd best just find the PC version of Beggar Prince and find someone to hack it for you. More chances of finding a PC hacker than a Genesis hacker in any case.

I might offer to translate even if you find someone. RadicalR ripped the game script for me once before actually, I had the whole thing but probably lost it now due to formatting, and that got nowhere due to both of us getting busy with other things.

Lucky for me then that I started with translation hacking on my mind. And as my caveman ASM hacks to G Gundam, Zeta Gundam and Sylvanian Families 5 can attest, I turned out to be pretty damn good at it from day 1.

Wouldn't the fact that they were caveman ASM hacks predicate that they weren't very good?   Undecided\

I was able to change Zeta Gundam's font size and implement an uncompressed English title screen in G Gundam without ever touching a compiler.
