So I got Sonic Gems, the Japanese version for Bare Knuckle. And then I discover I need to rip and hex edit the ISO to get the Japanese soundtrack.

I hex edit it with Free Hex Editor Neo, but the music is still the US version, despite my following the instructions. Any idea why this could be? I changed every instance of BGM_US.ASF to BGM_JP.ASF and then saved the ISO.

Anyway, it gets worse. Only now that I've played the game do I discover that Bare Knuckle and all the other cool games are locked.

Is there any way to hex edit Sonic Gems on the PS2 so that all games are unlocked by default?

I've still got the ISO and Free Hex Editor Neo, so I should in theory have all the tools.

Because I'm not playing anything for 7 hours to get this, I'd rather go back to my modded Xbox. Sad

EDIT:
This should be easy, right guys? Because I've checked the ISO's folder structure with IsoBuster and the MD roms are in a folder. Bare knuckle is titled BK1.CPT for example, and using a hex editor, it's easy to find when hex editing the ISO.

So would this make it easy to locate the areas of code which make them accessible?

Instead of looking to modify the ISO to have the additional features unlocked, why don't you go to gamefaqs and download a save that has everything unlocked?

Alternatively, I'm sure there are codebreaker/armax/what-have-you codes that will unlock these as well. It would be much easier than hacking the actual disc, provided that is all you're wanting to accomplish.

Sadly I don't have a device that would allow me to transfer a downloaded save onto my PS2 memory card.

All I really want to accomplish is to unlock everything (and get the Japanese music running), so please do tell me about these: codebreaker/armax/what-have-you codes.

Would I require some form of action-replay style boot disc in order to implement them, or do I need a piece of hardware to plug into the system?

You download the save files to a USB stick, you put the codebreaker/ AR / whatever disc on the PS2 (it's self-booting), you stick the USB into the PS2, you load the file, voila.

That said, some PS2s are incredibly picky with their USB sticks. YMMV.

I did not even realise the PS2 could be made to recognise a USB stick. That's fantastic, thank you! Cheesy

You can only use this if you already have hacked your PS2 or if you have a cheat device. Keep that in mind.

What findings?

What I posted on the blog was what I'd discovered through googling, specifically the sonicretro topic where the guy mentions hex editing.

All this topic told me was how to transfer saves to a USB key. Which I didn't mention in the blog post, but perhaps should have. Nothing related here ended up there, so I don't see what the problem is. It's not like I was trying to take credit for anyone here.

And Deets, get the fuck off my back. That blog post, and my others, are stuffed to the gills with links to sources and credits to people who gave info. Why the fuck would I not want to give credit where it's due?

EDIT:
I've edited the entry, in case anyone cares.

Okay, guys. I guess we can't talk about Sonic Gems anymore. Let's talk about cheese instead. Cheesy
(sorry. Just poking fun at the bot's message. Shouldn't it be "this post"?)

You know, a bot would be nice. I actually have to copy paste that from somewhere every time and manually edit the quote. But that's great that it has the added effect  of amusement. In any case, the preformed responses are designed to be more impartial and lacking in any personal opinions about the content of reported posts, if it wasn't apparent already.
