Hey, everyone. Somewhat of a new face here, but I just finished a retranslation of Fire Emblem Gaiden for the NES. Before submitting it to the site, I'd like some people to go through it to perhaps catch things that I could not.

First, the download:

Inside the ZIP are 3 patches: 1 for the Japanese ROM, one for j2e's attempt, and another for StarWolf's fix of some of j2e's problems.

What's new:

  • Translated all of the stuff j2e didn't, including some NPC speech, battle dialogue, and the credits.
  • Fixed names and items to fit the space alotted so that things don't disappear in menus and magic doesn't freeze the game.
  • Provided better text flow control than j2e.
  • Made a better title screen.

Anyway, I found quite a few oddities as I translated. There are discrepancies here and there, which is why I'd like some people to help search out what I couldn't find.

As an example, there are lion statues all over the game that allow you to up stats. Every statue but one reads an argument for the stat's name when saying that your character gained that stat. The single place that didn't follow this had its text hard-coded in for some reason.

Anyway, I hope I can get a little help here, as it's hard to find anyone willing anywhere else, I'd think. Hopefully this thing can be fixed into a decent translation!

One final note for those playing: Hold Start and Select when picking a File to start your game at. You can then pick Easy Mode, which doubles XP gained and allows item trading between the two main parties for free.

I must have the worst luck in the world.  I just finished FE Gaiden about 2-3 weeks ago using that partial patch with all that gibberish during levels up and random numbers appearing in the text when parts weren't translated.  I saw your video, it looks great.  If you had posted 2 months ago I would have jumped on this but I'm sure you'll find some testers.

EDIT:  I tried using your patch version that accounts for Starwolf's fixes.  I'm using VirtualNES and after I applied your patch, it gives me a warning that says "Because recorded CRC is different, there is the case that cannot load normally, Do load?"  When I load it, everything seems to be working, but I'm not sure if there would be other problems.

Hmmm, weird. I'll have to mess around with some different emulators and see what that might mean. Thanks for lettin' me know, though! Sorry I didn't do this sooner for you, haha! Two months back I was workin' on a Link's Awakening Save Editor which also might be good to submit here, but I dunno. Wink

That just means that the saved game and any saved states associated with that filename were originally saved to a ROM with a different checksum. States may cause a problem, but in a case like this your battery save should be completely fine.

I actually fooled around with a lot of the save states I had left over from when I finished the game and although it gave me that message I mentioned above, the game seems to work perfectly and I didn't see any errors although I only played with it for a relatively short amount of time.

Hopefully Artemis can find testers for his patch.  The work he did certainly makes the game a lot more fun to play and I think it is a very good game, especially for the NES era.

Yes, thanks for the info, Spinner. I'll put that in the ReadMe just in case.

I have a collection of savestates to test things, but there's always SOMEthing missed here and there. Things I haven't tried are Sonia's ending sequence (my save file had Dean, though the pointer is right, so it should be fine) and the text that comes up if you have too many items. I have no clue what that number is, but I can only assume it's 255 or so, which is a ridiculous amount to get since beyond maybe 25 items, you need to get the rest as rare drops.  I tried hacking the save file, but it apparently has crazy checksums or something -- it erases my saves any time I change anything. Sad

I love this game, but I'm not sure if I'd be able to play along with the game...  Just not into much gaming at the moment, I'm afraid.

But, I have a bunch of savestates of the game for FCEUltra I used to test out my various hacks before.  I think there's one before every battle/event.  The characters are maxed out and stuff to speed through the game, so it should be easier to get where you need to if a savestate doesn't bump you along.  If you end up needing them, let me know and I'll post them.

Actually, I have my own collection from testing myself. Smiley Believe me, I tested everything I could, but it always helps to have someone else double-check. But thank you for the offer! I think I'll just submit it to the site and call it complete. If anything huge comes up, hopefully someone will contact me.

If it was turned down, you probably got an email saying why (unless something went wrong :0).

I'm trying to work things out with staff. They seem to think it's an addendum to j2e's, but it isn't -- it's an entirely new translation, and I started from scratch when making it. I'll put it back in the queue when I hear back from staff.
