Given the recent outpouring of love for this version of the game, I've been considering porting a partially finished enhancement hack of mine over to it. The hack rebalances the game, mixes up the weapons and magic a bit, and replaces arm gear with an accessory system like the later games in the series use. I have quite a bit of data already, but I was curious if anyone had anything else. If you post over at Slick, I have your data already, but it might be a good idea to post it here anyway.

What I'm most interested in tracking down:

  • Enemy attack scripts
  • Treasure chest contents
  • Magic animations
  • Weapon animations
  • Magic randomly cast by weapons

These are really all I need to finish the hack, but I haven't had any success in finding any of it yet. I figured I'd ask on the chance someone already has, and save myself some time.

I apologize for not responding directly to your request. Just had a couple of comments...

I'm not sure I understand the nature of the hack. Are you porting a hack from another version of the game to FF4A? (I was a little confused, because you linked to a thread about the DS version)

Also, I really hope you plan to fix the game's numerous bugs. At the very least, consider using the European or Japanese revised version, since they addressed some of the problems.

The hack was originally made for the SNES version (based on FF2us R1.1). The GBA version has a few new features that I'd like to take advantage of, which is why I'm considering porting the changes over. I also like the idea of hacking a portable version of the game, just because I like playing on portables more than consoles. If this were FF6 then porting it over wouldn't be a problem, since the data is stored in the exact same format between games, but that's not the case with FF4.

Edit: I should mention that I have considered hacking the DS version, but for now I think I'd rather work with FF4a.

It will be based on the European version, for the bugfixes. I won't be fixing any of the remaining/added bugs though, sorry.

I got some slightly not so good news for the Chest data.  As it turns out, the game does not use specific co-ordinates to keep track of the locations on the map for any of the chests.  Basically, chest tiles(or tiles set up to contain items) are placed on the map(which is compressed).  Then the data reads each tile, and adds the contents.  That means that the first chest tile located will contain the first item in the list.  The good news is that it means that all you need to do is edit the map accordingly, and not fool around with co-ordinates.  The bad news is that the map is compressed.

I also found event scripts, and they use relative pointers.  I haven't played with this game for a few years, so unfortunately I don't remember alot of the stuff I've found.
