You're probably right. I still don't know what the point is, though. Unless there's something specific that it's monitoring the existence of. >__>

It's marking everything that's set to FF (255) as free and the rest as "alloc" (i.e. "allocated").  I think it's a safe bet, since free (initialized) memory would generally be set to either 00 or FF.  And of course, everything that's not free has been allocated for something or another.  There are a few edge scenarios, but it seems like this person is looking for space to add something new in.
