I'm trying to figure out how to get at the text in the m.c. kids nes rom.  it seems to be compressed or something, but i'm not sure how to find it (the usual tables don't work). can anyone point me in the right direction or help me out? EVery other friggin thing in this game is laid out so easily... just the text is a bit of difficulty.

That's an NES game, right?

What do you mean by "the usual tables"? You won't always find English text encoded as plain ASCII (though it's certainly how I prefer doing things ^_^;). Try checking the PPU viewer in FCEUXD and see what the tile indexes come up as.

You will find (some) plain text encoded as ASCII in this game though Smiley

The developer of the game mentioned that he used a packer for the game, so maybe it's in that format.

the problem is i don't know ANYTHING about that sort of thing. all the text i've ever dealt with has been of the build a hex table, replace values type.
apparently opening the file in notepad and changinf the ascii txt screws up the rom though. hee hee
