Hey people, I'm new here and a total nothing when it comes to hacking Roms..
But I've been trying to replace the Castlevania SOTN's music of the second castle, and so far I've been able to extract the musicfiles out of a larger file (with no extention) and replace some music with Soundforge.
Now I've got everything done, but the only problem is, I can't seem to get into the XA_STR1 file where all the musicfiles are stored to replace them with my modified ones..
I've tried and tried, and looked all over the internet.. But there's nothing I can find that can get me inside that file..
Is there anyone here that may have an idea?

Once again, I'm a complete newbie at hacking Roms, so any help at all would be very much appreciated  Smiley

After that, use a hex editor and try to find some "magic bytes" inside of it that tell you what kind of archives etc. there are in that file and what file type the file is itself. After that, you can google and try your luck or just figure it out on your own. Mostly it will be a container format that has all the different files inside of it and each file is in another format, maybe somewhat easy to decipher like midi-alike etc. Of course, all is going to be proprietary to begin with, hence no tools so far.

cYa,
