Hi there I am new to the ROM hacking Scene and have been surprised at the lack of good hands on Tutorials.
i am part of the 90% of humans that learn much much faster and better via hands on. now i know there are some Tutorials out there..... but damn.... its slim pickings.
the best one i found so far was link= http://wiki.smwcentral.net/wiki/Tutorial:hacking_a_routine

now if we had a few dozen of tuts like these the scene would take a huge jump

Well, the lack may be part of the "as a romhacker you need to learn how to stand on your own two feet and get the info yourself" thing, that's been going on for decades now.

I personally dislike hands-on tutorials as the only way some people make tutorials. I prefer nice references, structure tutorials etc. Hands on is good when you learn things. But you only learn this once and then you have the basic grip to read through such tutorials IMHO.

The prime reason why there aren't any tutorials is because it's a general conceptual thing.

Not every game will have the same design or behavior like another, and even though a tutorial such as SMW for the SNES (that you have linked) is widely documented, it doesn't exactly apply to say the GBA version of SMW... even though there are major similarities.

You need to understand bits and pieces of how games work in order to properly hack them... whether it be the actual ASM (assembly), the internal data formats, and whatever it may be.

Hands on tutorials give you an idea of what you can modify, but don't actually teach you how it works in a different game... so you can't use a "blanket" tutorial for everything.

Giving you the information doesn't magically make you understand how things work. You have to actually apply what you learn into something to construct something better.

The main reason why there probably is a lack of hands on tutorials is that they are usually written on forums or on wikis. Usually the author isn't bothered putting that info into a HTML document, zipping it up, uploading it somewhere, and then submitting it here.

However there is many tutorials here that will guide the person through the usual ROM hacking techniques.
