Hi, I'm new to the hacking scene.  I thought it would be fun to have a go at hacking Zelda 3 for the SNES, because I loved that game. The only problem being that Hyrule Magic is hopelessly user unfriendly. I'm backing everything up bit by bit and changing things slowly to see what happens, but it's getting frustratingly slow.

The worst problem I'm currently facing is the palettes. I found that there really wasn't much need to change Agahnim's sprite, only to change his colours. Thing is, I can't figure out which is his Palette. It seems as if it's not there at all.

I would be very grateful if someone could show me which one it is.

Also, it is possible to replace music with other pieces from other games? Or do I need a special program for that?

Thanks in advance for any help.

One of the biggest problems I see is when people start they want to do it "overnight" and zip past everything. You really have to have patience if you want to learn correctly and advance in your skills.

I don't know anything about the game or the app you're using, but you may want to try a tile editor like TLP http://www.romhacking.net/utils/108/ and do some reading on this. There's plenty of graphic hacking docs on this site if you search, I would reccomend one but personally I haven't done any graphic hacking.

Yes you want to look for an SPC music editor that will edit the data within the ROM.

It's not that I want to do it "overnight" or zip past it, but it seems as if this project is a bit daunting. Most people learn how to edit and what to edit at the same time, but with Hyrule Magic, you have to learn how to edit and what to edit separately. I'll try my hand with using multiple program editors, though... especially seeing as Hyrule Magic's music editor isn't as friendly as I initially thought it would be.

You'd have thought it would be easy to alter the Hyrule Castle music to make it sound more like Dark Hyrule Castle from The Minish Cap by slowing the tempo and changing the instruments, but even that's more difficult than it sounds!  Grin

Still, at the moment I'm changing things that shouldn't crash the game. You know, colours and monologue. I'm also altering the music bit by bit. Then, I'll alter the game's dungeons bit by bit, and then the Overworld. If nothing else, I'll at least have a game where Agahnim in game has the same colours as the version in the artwork.

Thanks for the advice.

As for altering color pallettes (or a color), that's usually pretty simple just export it in TLP and edit in Photoshop or whatever you like, pretty easy not that I have personally done it. As for changing text I have no idea how that app is doing it, but usually that's done via a hex editor and a table using pointers so you don't *crash* the game. For introduction to text I reccomend InVerse's doc as it got me started: http://www.romhacking.net/docs/37/

Hmm I don't see any docs that fit what you're looking for, the best one maybe Klarth's http://www.romhacking.net/docs/21/ it will give you an overbiew of bitplane format for multiple systems including SNES. You may want to check that out.

As for learning multiple things at once...I usually stick to 1 thing and progress, for example when I learned ROM hacking I started w/ Tables, then went to Bitplane, then to pointers etc. I didn't try to do all of it at once and didn't use a game specific app (not that they're bad) but you can't learn from them  Embarrassed
