First of all, if this topic is in the wrong place, I apologise. It can be moved at any time by a Mod or Admin.

I'm having some trouble finding out the bytes being used for the characters in Chrono Trigger Text Editor. So far, I have only been able to find out that Crono is {1A}. If any one knows the rest, can you please post them? It's a little strange to see the default names for the characters being displayed when the names have been changed. I appreciated the help. Smiley

?  1A is Crono's nickname "Cro" but the value was changed in the US version to be Crono's name again.  So you found the 2nd byte.

13 - Crono
14 - Marle
15 - Lucca
16 - Robo
17 - Frog
18 - Ayla
19 - Magus
1A - Crono Nickname that's just Crono in US version
1B - PC 1
1C - PC 2
1D - PC 3
20 - Epoch

If you're curious as to why the U.S. version doesn't give Crono a nickname, it's because the nickname was the first two characters of Crono's name. In Japanese, you can truncate a name this way and still be reasonably assured of producing something pronounceable, especially with an honorific attached ("Kuro-kun", "Rucchan", "Maru-chan", "Kae-san", "Ei-san", etc.), but not so in English: you'd need a fairly (but not terribly) sophisticated system to be sure of producing a sensible nickname by truncation, and my guess is that they decided it wasn't worth the trouble.

Thank you very much for your help, it has certainly saved me a lot of time and headaches!  While I was still experimenting with different bytes, I also found out that {1E} codes for Nadia. Also, thanks for adding Epoch too. I forgot to mention that one, but it's still important since it can also be renamed in the game. Thank you again for your help.

$1E is actually the code that prints the first 3 characters of Marl's name. The Japanese version uses it to make up the Mardia name.

wait what. so it was "Marl" and "Mardia" in japanese? and crono (and the others) didn't figure it out immediately??? Tongue

no wonder they changed it to Nadia. i guess they thought even Madia would be too close.

Lucca realized it pretty quick. Chrono's brilliance was never a selling point. He's the genius who named the robot Robo and the giant frog Frog after all.
